Looking for a good workout based on a traditional martial art? This is the place! Great community and very motivating.

I've been practicing Okinawan Go-Ju Ryu Karate-do for nearly 15 years. Sensei Mirko is one of the best instructors I have had the privilege to study under! He has pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me think and move in different ways that has really enhanced my abilities and has made me a better practitioner. Zanshin Dojo is also part of the International Okinawan Go-Ju Ryu Karate-do Federation (IOGKF). This is an incredible organization that allows us to train with prestigious instructors all over the world, and bring them to SF to teach us! It's an invaluable resource that we are very lucky to be part of. Not only is sensei amazing, but so are the students! It's such a wonderful group of people. Everyone supports each other and helps them in and out of class to be come better karate-ka, and better people in general! I have made some really great friends at this dojo. If you are interested in traditional martial arts, are looking for a good workout, and/or want a community of friends to support you, you really don't need to look any further!

Zanshin is more community and family than business, and has a warmth and welcoming spirit that embraces the beginner - at any age and any background. From the moment one arrives they are greeted by others from the dojo who are helpful, encouraging and nice. A new person finds themselves in the company of many super-accomplished practitioners eager to help, as well as a range of newer folks and beginners also seeking to help and encourage. Whether martial arts interests you from a self-defense standpoint, fitness, mental acuity or if you’re just curious, it’s a fantastic place to dip your toe into the waters, or dive deep to connect with a highly experienced and welcoming community. The Head Instructor, Sensei Mirko Buchwald is patient, welcoming, fun, warm, and *very* skilled. We are fortunate to have him here in San Francisco. The dojo is intimate and warm, tucked away in funky Haight Ashbury, and is very easy to park in a safe area, near Whole Foods (my ritual stop after every practice!) and also next door to a very hip coffee roastery and bar. Kids programs, adult classes, parties and special events, and numerous types of classss keep the place vibrant and always fresh. Come, take off your shoes, don a white uniform, leave your daily distractions outside the door and enjoy moving your body and clearing snd cleansing your mind. -Matthew Weeks (A beginner)

I've been training at Zanshin Dojo for almost 5 years now. It's a fantastic dojo, run by Sensei Mirko who is a dedicated instructor with years of experience. He's great at pushing me to try just a little bit harder each class, not overloading me with information, but matching the next technique to my current ability. The space is small, which lends itself to smaller, more intimate classes. Which is good, as Goju Ryu is a more technical style that requires a lot finesse and expert instruction. Classes are always a good mix of traditional techniques and practical application. Kata, bunkai, self-defense, sparring, and conditioning all in one. It's always a challenge both mentally and physically. The other students are wonderful as well. This isn't an anonymous exercise class. The students are friendly, everyone knows one another, everyone's there to train and have fun. Some of the students have been training here for more than a decade. Highly recommended for anyone interested in martial arts!
