I've been a member of Aterna Savings and it's predecessors for over 30 years. Reasonable fees combined with personal service. I don't live near a branch, but went into the Lake Shore branch today and was met with friendly, helpful employees. Going into the branch I felt welcomed as a person and not just a number.

I applied online early in April and sent cheques to open an account for myself and my wife. On April 20, I received a call that my cheque was returned by CIBC saying "NO ACCOUNT". I spent several hours calling my branch and every level at CIBC, including their customer service, and they all said that everything with my account was ok and that there was no record of a cheque being received and returned. Also they asked me to see that returened cheque which I asked Alterna to send it to me and they agreed. When I did not receive the cheque after a week, I called and asked about it, they said that it was not sent and they'll send it now. Its more than three weeks, I'm waiting to see that cheque. My guess is that they lost both cheques and instead of being honest about it, they lied to me thus wasting many hours of my time. I'm still waiting for that cheque before sending them a replacement.

Good service, always friendly, much better rates and lower fees than the big banks. A little out of the way for me but it's worth it.

This is Lakeshore's Credit Union. I like to shop and bank local.
