This school has focused on my child as an individual and has helped her more than words can say. We moved her to Waldorf from public school and I have never regretted that decision. The teachers have shown her kindness and caring and an understanding of her unique needs as a human being. She is now in grade 4 and reading and writing nonstop thanks to her teacher inspiring and encouraging her. She has also gained an amazing amount of confidence since she has started at this school. The highlight of my day is watching her come out of class at pick up time with a smile on her face and an excitement to share her school day with me.

If you had a asked me two years ago if I was going to say such negative things about a Waldorf School, I would have said you were crazy. But here we are. After 4 years at KWS, we have pulled our daughter out. The last 2 years have been rife with political turmoil and negligent leadership. A year ago, myself and a few other concerned parents attempted to re-stabilize the school (after it's last Board of Trustee upheaval) by running as Executive board members. In that year, we tried in vain to stay the course and repair the damage inflicted by our previous Board. However, when you are working with people who are autocratic, that is an exercise in futility. Gone is the Three Fold Social Order that Waldorf schools thrive on. In its place, there exists a pervasive dysfunctional dynamic that makes most decisions based on fear. As a result, many of the parents regrettably followed with blind faith, in the hopes that all would eventually be reconciled. This did not happen. Now, there is apathy towards any serious infraction of the school's bylaws and governance. The children are the direct victims of a complete lack of leadership and have now turned up with developmental deficits - my daughter included. Because of the irresponsible financial mishandling of the school, there was no Eurythmy, wood working, nature walks (minimum), games and recorder lessons. These are all valuable skills needed for proper motor skill development according to Steiner. In summary, the current Board of Trustees have bankrupted the school - financially, ethically, morally and, worst of all, spiritually.

The Kelowna Waldorf School is a quality education with good hearted, caring educators. Children receive an artistic, developmentally based education that integrates the whole child. The celebrations and festivals offer community and connection for families. The curriculum encourages the growth of individual strengths and confidence in the children. Many positives to explore in this school!

In lieu of the recent Castanet news, I feel obligated to write this review, as I was a student at the Kelowna Waldorf School from Grades 1 - 8. It difficult to read what's happened to the School that I remember with nothing but love. While it's been over 10 years since I left, I'm blown away at how things could have gotten to the point they got to, with students and teachers leaving alike. This paints the unjust image that Waldorf education is bad, where in reality those teaching, having simply strayed from the path. Waldorf education taught me to love, to care, to be kind. To have empathy, to fix things when they're broken, not to simply buy something new. I was Taught how to knit, to sew, how to bake Bread. Plant a Garden, take care of that garden, and reap it's rewards. My best friend is still my best friend today. Waldorf read me stories, showed me that Dragon's DO exist, but that you don't need shining armour to defeat them. It's sad whenever a negative change happens to a place you love, and I hope that the Kelowna Waldorf School goes back to it's roots and is restored to the place it was. Waldorf Education is brilliant, and I encourage you not to let those wanting to take it in a different direction, to taint that image. Thanks.
