Take your money elsewhere. Please. Our daughter got lice. She is 7 and has not-quite shoulder length hair. We took her to Hair Fairies on a Thursday. They combed her hair out for 2 hours (I suppose credit should be due to them for a thorough combing, so there's that). They found 8 bugs and 40 nits. They said anything above 3 bugs they consider a "severe" case. Every other place I checked with based severity of case on the number of nits. Specifically, nits in the multiple hundreds is what these other places classify as 'severe.'
Well, since Hair Fairies classified it as "severe" they require an additional FULL treatment (minimum 1 hr, possibly more) three days after the first treatment in order for them to provide any sort of guarantee. I asked why she wouldn't just be screened in three days and then a determination made on whether she needed additional treatment or not. Hair Fairies told me, "well, in case we missed anything in the first treatment, we will get it in the second treatment. We won't just do a screening, our process is a second FULL treatment."
I asked, "So you are basically charging me full price so you can check your own work?"'
They said, "No, in case there were microscopic eggs we missed, we will get them the second time around." (This is a problem on several levels, but one important fact I've learned is that eggs are by and large the same size and don't "grow" over the course of the gestation period. In other words, once laid, the egg doesn't get any bigger. It is the size it is until it hatches.)
After having these frustrating conversations, we called around and landed on Pediatric Hair Solutions in Cornelius (whose phone operator spent 20+ minutes on the phone with me, politely and patiently answering my myriad questions). They had us come in on Saturday. The tech on duty that day (Gwen) combed out our daughter's hair in 30 minutes or so and determined she had no remaining eggs.
(Gwen also offered to screen our son (similar age with very short hair) at no additional charge. I wouldn't imagine this offer is typical, given our circumstances were a bit unique, but it was greatly appreciated nonetheless.)
After determining with confidence there were no additional eggs in our daughter's hair (which supports the stance that Hair Fairies is a racket - they did a good job on the first go-round but they still wanted me to pay for another FULL treatment (!)), Gwen collected the $25 screening fee and sent us on our way with her confident professional opinion that our daughter needed no additional treatment. This would have been the perfect opportunity for her to push their own treatment on us (which relies on more than just manual combing and actually focuses on destroying the laid eggs), but she did not. She politely answered even more questions from me and gave us her professional opinion on our best path forward, regardless of whether that meant more $$$ for PHS or not. Should we ever have lice issues in the future, we will be going straight to PHS.
Please consider options other than the Hair Fairies before taking your child to get treated for head lice. Hair Fairies has been around for nearly two decades, but you have to remember that means they are using nearly two-decade-old technology, which is solidly inadequate, given the newer (yet still tested and proven) technologies out there. Hair Fairies is hanging on and playing off people's fear (to milk what has surely been a cash cow for them for years) before society wises up and moves on to more than just manual combing.
Do yourself a favor: Take the time to do some research, make some phone calls, and make an educated decision prior to going with Hair Fairies. I think you'll be glad you did.
