I had a face lift several years ago (I do not remember the exact date, but I think it was in March of either 2002 or 2003). At my initial visit, Dr F. explained that the procudure would not stop aging, it would just set back the clock and then natural aging would continue from that point at the normal rate. That has indeed been my experience. My biggest concern was a sagging jawline and swelling in the neck. The procedure corrected both problems. My neck is still doing well, but the jawline is slowly starting to sag again--though it is still much better than just before I had my initial surgery. I am considering making an appointment for a consultation for a second surgery...I am not sure if I want to do it now or wait a bit longer, but at some point I will definately do this again.
I believe Dr F. is pretty ethical and pretty skilled. He did, however, recommend a procedure that I did not really need at that time--a forehead lift. It turned out that having the forehead lift and face lfit at the same time was much cheaper than having it done as two separate procerdures, so I went ahead and did it. I regreat that decision because there were complications (4 little bald spots hear my hairline) from a procedure that I really did not need (as my forehead did not have any wrinkles in my late 40s). However, the pre-surgery literature did warn that some perminant hair loss could be one of the side effects. I assumed it would not happen to me, but it did.
Now here is why I trust Dr F. and consider him ethical. He was not legally obligated to do anything about those 4 little bald spots because I had been prewarned they were a possible side effect. But he wanted me to feel satisified with my procedcure, so he did a second procedure at no cost to me that cut away the skin of the bald spots and stitched the hair togehter to close them up. This worked on 3 of the spots, but one spot remains a problem to this day. However, the spot is not that big and I have learned a lot of hairstyles that hide it, so it is not a major concern for me.
Also, my neck was swollen/puffy after the "recovery period", which was something the surgery was supposed to correct. So at the same time that Dr F. fixed the hair loss, he also did a free liposuction on my neck to give me the desired effect. To this day, my neck looks great, even though I have regained some weight and am about 50 lbs heavier than when I had the surgery. All of my other friends at my weight have fat necks and chins, but mine is still shapely. (I wish I could say that about my hips and midsection!)
My one complaint was in understanding how serious the surgery was and how long the recovery time would be. Either Dr F. underplayed the recovery time because I was a bit younger than his typical client, or I simply did not understand him.I was under the impression that I would be totally recovered from the surgery in about a week, and only completely out of commission the first 72 hours. The surgery was much more major than that, and I was pretty much totally out of comission for about 2 weeks, and it took over a month before I had the energy to function normally. The surgery itself was painless, but the recovery period was much more painful than I expected. At the time I thought to myself, 'if I knew it was this uncomfortable, I am not sure I would do it.' But after the swelling went down (which takes months) and I could see the full results--then I decided that the results were worth the short term suffering after all..
In fact, six or seven years later, I am starting to get a bit of sag in the jawline again (which was to be expected as I continued to age after my initial surgery). It is not nearly as bad as when I did my initial surgery, so I am trying to decide if I want to fix it now or if I want to wait a while. But I do plan to go back to Dr. F. for the second procedure when I have it. I believe he is capable and will do a good job.
