Our two children just completed their first year at Tehiyah,, and I joke to everyone that they had the best year of their lives. Though we live in Oakland (and therefore have a 20+ minute commute), we chose Tehiyah over our local elementary and other local private schools for a number of reasons: 1) A simple joy that permeates the school. One need only to visit the classrooms, walk through the halls, or attend one of the school's many celebrations (like the Purim Carnival) to see how happy the children seem. 2) Creativity and experimentation: At Tehiyah, at least in the earlier grades, the children seem to learn by doing, from hands-on projects (like designing, creating, and then parading a very large Chinese dragon for the Chinese New Year) to scientific inquiry (will a paper clip sink or float? how do plants grow? Let's find out.) I will say if your child is artistic, the art room is simply AMAZING (and there are after-school classes for the older grades that include sewing, jewelry making, etc.). 3) Community: Though as a family we've only been at Tehiyah a year, it seems as if we've known some of our new friends forever. It's a very creative, intellectual, warm, and bighearted group of families. A few things to point out: some of the classes are imbalanced gender-wise, which I guess can happen with smaller classes. A few perks to point out as well (though they cost extra): The hot lunch service is wonderful (lovely and varied meals, with different options, like gluten-free or vegetarian), and a school bus service goes through Berkeley and Oakland. Overall, a very nice school.

Tehiyah Day School has been a fantastic choice for my son as he enters kindergarten this year! My husband and I searched for a Jewish school that would be welcoming, warm and focus on the whole child, while also being academically rigorous. We cannot be happier with Tehiyah! When our son exhibited separation anxiety over the transition to elementary school, the school's teaching team and student life staff worked seamlessly to put a plan in place to get him through the first few weeks of school. What a difference that made! He now loves school, has made friends, is being challenged and loves his teachers and classroom. I would recommend Tehiyah to any parent who values a strong academic experience, focus on socio-emotional health and the joy of learning.

This is our 7th year at Tehiyah. We have an amazing head of school. She has made many changes since she started last year. My kids are happy to go there everyday and look forward to their day of learning. There are some great teachers there and we hope you check it out for your kid(s).

I have three children at Tehiyah Day School. All are thriving, happy, engaged learners. Tehiyah has it all. Tehiyah has great academics, a wonderful community of involved parents, teachers that love what they do. Middle school is a seamless transition and a great preparation for any high school.
