Having begun training in martial arts in my early teens I've been exposed to a variety of styles and philosophies.  Grappling has always been one of my favorite disciplines & I recently decided that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was the one art I wanted to pursue.  Having done a lot of research into academies around Victoria BC I thought VanIsle BJJ would be a good fit for myself & my 8-year-old son. One of my apprehensions about other academies is that the instructors put more effort into their members who participate in competitions representing the school than they do to the rest of the students. Not the case at VanIsle BJJ. The part I like most about training under Matt & Jean-Marc DeGroot is they make sure their students know the difference between sport & combat applications of techniques. When demonstrating a technique they take the time to point out that "this isn't pavement safe" or "in real-life you'd need to watch out for an incoming strike: Here's how you might avoid it". There's no smoke & mirrors here either, techniques are presented with clear disclaimers such as: "if you have short arms, this might not be the best approach" or "this technique has about an 80% effectiveness rate" (because regardless what you've been told: no close-combat technique is 100% effective in all situations.) Matt & Jean-Marc know their stuff. These guys go out of their way to provide a safe, clean, fun environment for everyone. There is no shortage of respect and comradery at this school.  Very glad we joined this academy and looking forward to many years of fun & fitness with the Van Isle team.

Van isle bjj..well, five stars is not enough for this name. It should be given more due to the fact what the instructors bring to the table there knowledge and patience and overall the welcome feeling they give everybody. To top it off people you train with are so positive it has no negative atmosphere it's just an overall a great place to train and learn ways to defend yourself also a couple laughs in the mix. If your thinking about it..stop just come by. There won't be a regret of any sort. In fact I guarantee no regrets. Only regret was not starting sooner.

The best Jiu jitsu on the island! Jean-Marc and Matt run phenomenal classes, covering techniques that are practical and effective in competition, and pushing students to continually improve. In addition to hard rounds with tough training partners, there's lots of scheduled time to drill your own style and develop your game. I definitely recommend checking them out if you are looking for somewhere in Victoria to hone your skills and become a beast on the mats!

These guys are the best! A great gym for beginners and experienced people too. It has a real family feeling and a positive vibe. A good group of women as well which I hear is rare.

This is the best BJJ/Martial Arts club on the Island! Hands down. The team is super friendly, classes are well organised and the gym is spotless clean! And they even have a sauna!!! If you're thinking about joining a martial arts gym, look no further. Simply the best
