I have spent a few years at a few different schools. Compared to others, this one leans to no-nonsense MA techniques mixed with conditioning and some tradional training. It is more mind/body/spirit training with a street safety focus than tournament techniques, all wrapped in a family friendly atmosphere. Not only has it been a great place to start and build fundamentals but also to further develop advanced skills. It is a great tool for getting in shape physically, mentally and to improve any lifestyle.

By far the best Sensei and dojo for traditional Go Ju Ryu Karate. I was a student as a child and when I moved back to Toronto I looked for Sensei Verlaan right away because he is one of the highest dan's available in North America and among the highest quality of karate teachers possible. You can hear the perfected instruction and style, speaking through him, from the karate masters of old. His dojo rotates a different focus on a weekly basis (sparring, Ju Jistsu, weapons etc) on top of the regular karate curriculum to create well rounded martial artists. The greatest achievement that one will recieve from this dojo is the focus of self development leading to Self Mastery of the mind, body and soul.

My son has been attending this program for 4 months now and absolutely loves it. I am impressed with what he's been learning and with all the trained professionals and staff. It's been a great experience all around!

I joined this dojo just under three months ago and can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I've made. I was looking for a push (having become tired of my usual gym routine), was looking for something more stimulating (both physically and mentally), and was even hoping to make a few new friends. I found all three of those things at Sensei Verlaan's dojo. The staff, teachers, and students are all friendly, helpful, and serious about making everyone who comes looking to learn feel welcome.

Trained at The York Academy of Martial Arts for almost 10 years and I have nothing but praise for this school. All of the instructors genuinely care about your well-being and development in the Martial Arts. I've tried other Martial Arts schools and nothing has even come close to what this school has done for me. I grew so much as a person thanks to my training here and through the life-long friends I have made. If you're looking to get into training, York AMA is the place to go!
