Conditioning class is no joke!! Really puts your will to the test to make it through this class. Everyone there, and I mean everyone is so welcoming and wants to see you do great every hour. This place has it all when it comes to martial arts and strength training. If you’re looking for a Brooklyn Martial Arts academy then look no more. From Jeet Kune Do to MMA they know their material!

I started training 12 years ago at Andersons Martial Arts Academy where Sifu Phi Cruz had been teaching, now over 20 years. Once he left and opened the school with Sifu Anthony Fontana, I knew it was time to follow both of them to this new location. It is a beautiful and very clean facility, tucked away in a convenient location in Williamsburg, just one block away from the G and L trains at the Metropolitan - Grand Ave.'s / Lorimer Street stations and two blocks from the L Bedford Ave. Station. What I love about both Sifus is their passion for teaching and their respect for their students. No matter how slow, flexible or age group, they're both able to get their students learning and actually progressing. They have a very positive attitude, use inclusive language that for women or anyone in the LGBT community, will feel welcomed here. Unlike other mixed martial arts facilities, there's no bullying or unwanted sexual advances from students and/or staff members, where the students feel uncomfortable to return and train. Instead we are all focused on learning and pushing each other to the max. I also had private lessons with Instructor Tim Hollenbeck and Sifu Anthony Fontana and my mind was blown away. For one Tim taught me knife fighting from a theological perspective that I never knew it existed. We learned speed drills with the idea that as a fighter I am in control of the weapon at all times despite the disadvantages. As for Sifu Anthony's private, I learned safety as far as using weights, which I fear not doing right. And we worked on my alignment. He put me to work and I mean I thought I was dying, but within a safe range that I finally grasped the concepts of safely handing the different size weights and how I posture in every angle. I felt so good I haven't complained about a class being too challenging because when it is, I can face it without fear of injuries. I've also had the privilege of working with Instructor Kristen Cabildo and she is no joke! The warm ups are very specific to stretching all muscles and safely warming up to get ready for intense cardio to be expected during her classes. She's very skilled at determining what the body needs as far as the anatomy of every tendon and muscle and explains clearly the instructions. She's also very fun, motivating and treats women and men alike as far as the knowledge and intensity of the material that is taught. I'm very proud to have her and look up to as a woman when I see her able to do that things I am paying to learn. I also LOVE Fernando Restrepo our BJJ instructor who has made a curriculum to make sure we are able to follow and master the techniques before moving on the the next ones. As a professional in the pedagogy field, he's able to deliver the details required in a BJJ class with ease while making sure we are all learning and having fun. BJJ has always been a major challenge for me and I have a hard time grasping some concepts. I appreciate how he uses analogies and shows us many variations to achieve our goals despite our age, weight, flexibility and experience. He's a true teacher! Everyone that works at U.M.A. is very professional, very passionate and empathetic, not to mention all have the gift to teach. If you're interested in learning the concept put forth by our founder Bruce Lee while learning the martial arts that will help you become the martial artists you wish to be, then this is the facility and the people you want to teach you. I walked into Sifu Phil Cruz class 12 years ago and I have not regret it. It has been a life-changing investment for me.

I trained under Sifu Phil Cruz years ago when he was at Anderson's. So happy that he opened his own school in Brooklyn! Been training there since he opened up a few weeks ago and it is awesome! The JKD class in particular is amazing!

LOVE THIS PLACE! I've been training martial arts for the past 3 years and I love the space and vibes Sifu Cruz and Fontana have created at UMA. The place itself it's gorgeous with lots of art work and it's super clean. Schedule is great and all the instructors are very kind and passionate, love Krav Maga, Bjj and Battle Ready! They offer kids class as well and all levels students are welcomed! Definitely proud to be part of UMA.
