I studied with Mike for a little under a year, and found many of the tools I needed to be a great martial artist readily available. But for me, the lack of structure and a formalized class/routine was somewhat disappointing. Not being the best student didn't help matters, but I was also discouraged by the small pool of students - many of whom were at dramatically different skill levels and skill sets. This made it difficult not only to train, but to find others I could really "connect" with and build friendships with. I appreciate Mike's approach, I just wish it had been implemented on a larger scale to a wider pool of people. Rates were reasonable (compared to many commercial schools/aka McDojos), but for a college student it was certainly a financial commitment. Expect to invest at least $100 a month, but if you put in the time (classes are four nights a week for a couple hours) you can seriously get your money's worth.

I've been training at Touchstone Wing Chun for about three years now. I was hooked from Mike's initial presentation- it just made sense. Since then, I've realized that Mike's understanding of Wing Chun is absolutely world-class. Having already learned basic Karate and kickboxing, I found Wing Chun to be a truly different martial art, the basic theories and techniques of which can be used right away for effective self-defense. Mike's training approach is unique. A student first learns Jeet Fa, which is organized into two basic levels. It is a stand-alone self-defense system, containing the most effective techniques from all levels of Wing Chun. At six-months, students should be able to defend themselves against attackers of much greater size or strength. Mike's teaching method emphasizes perfection of technique, in order to avoid the 'sloppiness' that occurs without it- which is frustrating to students and teachers alike- and ultimately causes ineffective application in an actual self-defense situation.
