I started training Hung Gar Kung Fu at AMAS when I was 13 years old. This was by far the best decision I ever made. AMAS became my home away form home. Training here Increased my overall physical fitness and helped spring board me to the career path I am on now. The instruction here is top notch, and after leaving Ann Arbor to go to college and experience the quality of instruction at other TMA schools I can say this with 100% confidence. This is not a McDojo by any stretch of the imagination. If your goal is to get a black belt in a year or less then this is not the place for you. When I get myself settled back in Ann Arbor, I will be coming back to AMAS to continue my learning.

The first martial art i took was kung fu with Sensei Karl Scott back in 1984. Awesome intrstuctor and the dojo was home away from home. I also studied in the aikido program for a short time. A very good group to train with. Steve Stanley.

A wonderful place to train, and to learn. I have found all of the instructors here to be very supportive and encouraging to students without regard to their skill or experience levels. The atmosphere is one of cooperative learning rather than being competitive. The dojo is large enough so that you continue to encounter and work with new students, yet is small enough that you can get a lot of personalized attention, and form friendships with your fellow regular students. I especially like the fact that you can learn several different disciplines - students are encouraged to choose one art at first and to stick with it for a year or so, but after that are welcome to study one of the other arts as well. Its a good way to become a well-rounded martial artist and to learn new skills to complement the ones you have already learned. The instructors have a combined hundreds of years of experience across many traditions and lineages, so there are always new perspectives and skill-sets to explore as your training develops. It is a place where it is very easy to quickly feel "at home", and to make martial arts training a regular part of your life.

Before joining a school you want to get a feel for the school, you want to feel welcomed...a tour of some sort. Try to offer some incentive to go there besides the knowledge, what about showing the building, meet the instructors.... IE; greeting, cheerful welcome to customers, A TOUR, stop treating visitors like their a burden... Sifu can be a cool guy at first (and should be open to all), ...get people wanting to come to your school before you turn into the stern instructor that no wants to be around. Wing Chun is my life, but I would not join if my Sifu and my school is disrespectful and rude to guest. Respect.

I've had a very positive experience at the Asian Martial Arts Studio (AMAS). AMAS, Ann Arbor's oldest traditional dojo, offers kids classes and adult instruction in karate-do, aikido, kung fu, wing chun, and tai chi chuan. .......... The Okinawan karate styles taught at AMAS include Shorin ryu, Shudokan and Goju ryu. The curriculum covers kata training, kihon (basics) drills, kumite practice (generally ippon kumite) and more. There are nine classes weekly and open practice is available. No long-term contracts, monthly dues are reasonable. .......... I've been an AMAS karate student since the spring of 2008. My background: an older, non-athletic, female student, with no previous martial arts experience, who found herself simultaneously intrigued and intimidated by the idea of training in the martial arts. .......... My training experience at AMAS has been both physically and mentally rewarding. I find the physical training challenging in a good way - instructors clearly encourage students to do their best, and consistently prompt students to improve and to develop their skills. Physically I've made gains in my strength, flexibility and coordination. Mentally, the training has fostered sharper mental focus, keener observation skills, and heightened self-confidence. .......... The knowledgeable instructors create a training environment that is conducive to learning: safe, challenging, rewarding, and fun. I highly recommend AMAS to those sincerely interested in the study of Okinawan karate-do.
