Before joining the owner of the dojo, Damon Umholtz, encouraged me to check out other job jitsu dojos around and I did. None of them fit my needs. I wanted a non-pretentious place where I can study the art with people that have no ego, want you to learn, and are very friendly. I still study here and it is the highlight of my day when I go. Damon pushes you to succeed in many different ways and you are quick to catch the 'bug'. The dojo is great, with lots of mat space and the cleanest mats I've seen. I recommend anyone who is thinking of taking an interest in Jui jitsu or judo to call Damon and check out pjj.

I don't have enough good things to say about PJJ. Looking to get back into martial arts for fitness and self-defense, I looked at a few schools in Philadelphia, and have no doubt that I picked the best. This is one of the most inexpensive and no-frills schools, because the emphasis here is on solid instruction. There's no long-term contract required, and the training space itself is unassuming. A previous review is correct--this is more of a club than a school: everyone is incredibly friendly, and you'll get to know your training partners (mostly young adults) well. Damon Umholtz, the head instructor, is fantastically gifted as both a martial artist and a teacher. He trains WITH his students, and tailors lessons to people's interests. He is always patient and has a knack for explaining even the most complicated techniques in understandable ways. The curriculum is primarily rooted in the parent art of jiu-jitsu: its modern and traditional forms, and its evolution into judo. Damon teaches with a street self-defense orientation and often draws on aikido and Filipino martial arts as well, which is a rare and valuable perspective. I mainly attended the Wednesday and Sunday gi classes, which generally lasted about two and a half hours: the first hour devoted to judo/submission grappling/self defense, the second to ground-based jiu-jitsu and a half hour of free wrestling/randori at the end. Tuesday/Thursday Muay Thai classes are low-key, fun and a GREAT workout. So, in short, if you are looking to get into the martial arts for sport, self-defense, fitness, and fun--you owe it to yourself to check out PJJ.

My boyfriend and I started at Philadelphia Jiu Jitsu 6 months ago. I had never done martial arts before, or really any sport, so I was very nervous about starting something for the first time. I must say I am very happy I chose this place. Damon and the other instructors are extremely knowledgable and encourage questions at every class, and no question is too simple or too ridiculous. I like how at the jiu jitsu classes, Damon will often base what we cover that day almost completely off the questions, so the students help decide what we learn. The other members are very welcoming and encouraging no matter what level of experience you have. If I struggle with a move, my partner for that day is more than happy to help me figure out the issues. Overall, this place is great. The instructors teach and guide you and don't sugar-coat things. The other students are helpful, competent, and don't have huge egos. It's challenging, but also rewarding.

PJJ is not your average MMA gym. All of the members and instructors are friendly and inclusive of all experience levels. Membership includes entry into all classes held sun-fri. The PJJ curriculum is a combination of judo, BJJ, Muay Thai, and self defense with some knife defense, stick fighting, and other misc martial skills sprinkled in. Damon(owner) in particular is a wealth of knowledge. He is seriously willing to put as much work as you are into customizing a training regemin, and making sure you learn and grow to your best potential. Come willing to learn and improve. Leave you're ego at the door, and you'll fit right in.

In short, I would definitely recommend this place. Best part is no contract to join. Main focus is Jiu-jitsu (gi and no gi) and Judo. Others are self-defense, kickboxing, and Muay Thai. Each class is well balanced with conditioning, technique and sparring. Members are friendly and helpful. Safety is always a priority every class. Very nice dojo overall.
