My son has been taking classes here for the past year, starting with their Little Ninjas program & he has enjoyed every minute of it. Sensei Chris Shaeffer is wonderful with them (not surprising since he is a child psychologist) & exceedingly patient. He makes class both fun & informative for all the children & seems to skillfully cater to each student according to their level of ability/maturity. As for the overall atmosphere of the dojo, it seems fairly relaxed & well managed without being overly concerned about the amount of students in the class (i.e. they're not dying to get you locked into a monthly contract). They let my son attend several classes to gauge his interest before we handed them a check & we never once felt pressure to do so during those trial sessions. All of the advanced students seem willing to teach the younger ones and respectful of each other, regardless of the color of their belt. And what little observation I’ve had of the other senseis’ instruction shows a respect for the students & desire to teach their system professionally without the need to demean or subjugate. I have taken martial arts before & know the value of a well run studio with competent instruction; this is one such dojo & am glad that my child will learn to responsibly defend himself while building strong foundations of a moral character.

I have trained with this group of martial artists for many years. I have had the most amazing experience with this group of people. They are knowlegeable, experienced, and have a love for the art. The martial skills learned and life lessons fostered by this group of martial artists exemplify the best qualities of true martial artists. If you are looking for true traditional martial arts training you will not go wrong with this school.

This school should be more careful with instructors they hire. Shihan Henry should NOT to be trusted alone with women. Using his training to take advantage of and forcing himself on a woman is a disgrace to himself and the art.

Great instructors. Traditional Karate taught by knowledgeable and experienced Senseis

Amazing, traditional martial arts school. I have trained at this dojo for the last 6 years and have been completely impressed with the thoroughness of the instructors. Everyone is so friendly. It is heart-warming to feel the sense of genuine friendship and camaraderie among both the instructors and students. Since attending this Japan Karate Institute I have been awarded dozens of gold medals from various karate tournaments. The credibility of this dojo was further established in my eyes after witnessing the consistency of it's students ranking in the top three of almost all age and rank divisions among other schools. At the same time I admire how modest the dojo remains. While most martial arts schools shove their tournament trophies in the front windows to show off, JKI keeps most of theirs in the back as if it is no big deal to them. Competition aside, JKI caters to students of all ages and levels of ability. Confidence and self-discipline is instilled in our young students, while at the same time allowing them to have tons of fun! For the adult students, confidence and fitness is gained while becoming competent in self-defense techniques that range from simple and harmless to the advanced and incapacitating. I don't have enough good things to say about this karate school, but I'm going to stop myself before I make this review too long! lol I'll sum it up to this: I love this school and am very glad I found it. It really is like a second family to me. Japan Karate Institute - "Not to conquer others but to conquer the weakness within oneself."
