Aikido, I have found, is a never-ending pursuit that only becomes more intriguing as time moves forward. It is a way of self-defense, a way of maintaining physical fitness and flexibility, an activity that promotes friendship, a spiritual path, and most of all, simply a lot of fun. I would encourage anyone, regardless of age or physical ability to give it a try -- and I can think of no better group of people to pursue this art with than the members of Aikido of Eugene. My family and I moved to Eugene, Oregon in 2008. As a displaced Midwesterner, I felt somewhat out of touch with West Coast culture, however, I found an immediate sense of community and friendship with the people at this school. The instructors are highly skilled and are open and engaging. I have never known them to have anything other than the best interests of the individual student as their primary concern. The classes are open to all levels of ability and designed to promote personal growth and a sense of fellowship. I hope you can stop in and see what we're about. There's always a spot open for you on the mat.

Okay, disclaimer: I am a student at Aikido of Eugene. On the one hand, for some readers, that might make me a biased; but on the other hand, I'm a student at this dojo for a reason! Lots of reasons, actually. We have a dedicated group of students who are serious about this practice, while at the same time completely up to the task of enjoying our time on the mat, keeping it both light and fun while working hard. In addition to our senior instructor, Chuck Hauk sensei (6th dan), we have other instructors teaching throughout the week; each of them brings a slightly different flavor and emphasis to their classes. And that is how it should be... deep attention to technique, remembering the importance of blending and flow, the power of Aikido, as well as its philosophy of love and reconciliation; they're all here, and the training is a pleasure. Combine that with the etiquette and environment of respect and hard work that is part of the Best Martial Arts Institute, and the multiple seminars and events offering opportunities to study under other senior practitioners who come from Oregon and California (and occasionally even further afield) to teach, and train... all that for me adds up to a great place to call my aiki-home. If you're interested in training in Aikido, or even just checking it out, I'd encourage you to come by and watch (or join in) a class. I think you'll find something very special here.

I believe that I have known Chuck Hauk Sensei, the chief instructor of Best Martial Arts Institute, for about 15 years. His aikido is extraordinary. His teaching skills are among the very best I have seen. I always learn and have tremendous fun whenever I train with him. Hauk Sensei is terrific with people. He is very respectful, patient and quite funny. Aikido of Eugene is the place for great aikido in the Eugene area.
