My children have been going to the Lil Dragons class for a few months now. They love going and spending time on the mat. Before we started karate, my son was extremely shy, so much, so we had almost put him in speech therapy because he never talked. It turns out he just needed something to bring him out of his shell. We have done t-ball, soccer, camps, date nights for parents night out. Nothing gave him the confidence to speak in public. Then we started karate three weeks in, and he walks off the mat and says hey to an adult sitting in a chair up front. Later on, he waves at our neighbors across the street we have never met. The next day at childcare he asked if someone wanted to play. Now every day he surprises me from just saying excuse me to ordering his food when we go out. I have never seen him so outgoing and excited about anything. One day he turned to me and said, "Mom, I will not be shy anymore." Like it was just the easiest thing in the world to change, and he has. I'm the mom watching her child act up in public for the first time in his life, and I get excited about it. I am excited he wants to run down the aisle at the grocery store. I try not to encourage this lol, but man does it make us both happy. My daughter on the hand is extremely outgoing and has so much sass. Since starting karate, she is learning to work on her attitude and tone when speaking. She is learning about teamwork and what it means to focus. She has a hard time focusing and now at age six since starting karate she is realizing it and says, "Mom, I can not focus right now can this wait?" Yesterday she helped her brother put his shoes on (he broke his finger). She has started being so respectful. The staff tries hard to be involved in your child's life on and off the mat. For the first time in a very long time, I felt like I have a stable support system for my kids. I know if I am having a problem with them or they are having issues at school they will help me address it. My children have always been excellent, and I got complimented all the time at how well they behaved in public. It was/is sometimes still behind closed doors when the fighting and yelling begins. Since karate though they have a lot more respect for one another. Behaviors are learned, and as a young parent I know my attitude slide over to them and is coming out. Karate is helping them do better and honestly watch them try better makes me try better. As adults, we think we can get away with saying anything, but to watch a child learn to respect and love than see them sharing that is very humbling. I believe we have all benefited from karate and highly recommended it. I am incredibly proud of my kids for striving to be better individuals and team members at karate and home.
