This is an excellent place to learn and practice aikido. Sensei Brian Ericksen brings authentic aikido and is able to make it accessible to people of all ages and abilities. I have studied martial arts and taught for a while. After meeting Sensei Ericksen and the welcoming students at this dojo, I signed my teenage kids up - and they love it. I now study under Sensei Ericksen, too! If you want to learn a different kind of martial art and study with welcoming people under a great instructor, this is the place for you! This dojo is part of the USAF and is affiliated with Hombu Dojo in Japan.

My 16 year old son has recently joined Heaven and Earth Aikido and has raved about the experience. There are several classes each day, and students may attend more than one. Attention from the instructors has been top notch, and Brian goes out of his way to understand both what the student's goals are, as well as the parent's. I would recommend this school not just to children or teens, but to all ages. Classes vary in age, and the skills taught here are applicable from ages 9 to 90.

Heaven and Earth Aikido is a good location to understand the meaning to these questions and better yourself. It is easily found in Herndon, right by City Hall. The instructors are very kind and helpful, and your peers in martial arts are there on the journey of understanding with you. This place becomes like a family for many, myself included. Heaven and Earth Aikido offers both classes for adults and classes for children for those who want a more family experience with martial arts. I'm quite into studying martial arts. I've studied different Karate styles, practiced Kendo for sometime, and read up on multiple others. On top of that, I enjoy understanding how things can be useful for everyday life. Never before has a martial art integrated into my life more than Aikido. Relatively painful falls turn into mildly uncomfortable rolls. Shuffling turns into a dance across the room. Your thinking sharpens. How can I make this weakness into an advantage? How can I make this one movement better? How can I be in a better state of harmony with the world around me?

I have been a student at Heaven and Earth Aikido for about a month now, and it has truly been an awesome experience. Ericksen Sensei is a wonderful teacher and mentor, and has been patient with my "growing pains" as a beginner aikidoka. He incorporates the spiritual teachings of O'Sensei, alongside of the practical exercises, for a complete Aikido experience. There are also senior students who are very friendly and helpful. Everyone who I have met has made me feel right at home in the dojo. The classes are indiscriminate; a person of any skill or age can bow onto the mat and begin practice! In a month, I have already learned much (although just the very tip of the iceberg that is Aikido) and I am looking forward to a future of fulfilling study at H&EA.

I went looking for the full martial experience and I found it. This is so much more than a "kicking your way to flat-abs" McDojo. More than just self-defense and an awesome workout (it is both), it has given me a great community filled with patient teachers and students and a stronger sense of discipline and compassion. Through his practice and various veteran-focused charitable causes, Sensei Ericksen truly lives in the spirit of O'Sensei and does his all to make this world a better place through Aikido.
