I've trained at several other gyms before coming here...
Brazilian Top Team (HTX),
10th Planet Jiu Jitsu (Austin TX),
Paragon Jiu Jitsu (Austin Tx),
Eastside Austin Elite (Austin Tx),
Gracie Barra Austin (Austin Tx),
Austin Kickboxing Academy (Austin Tx,)
Krav Maga Worldwide (Austin Tx)
Eclectic Fighting Systems / SAMBO (Pflugerville, Tx)
Premier Martial Arts (Pflugerville, Tx)
10th Planet (New Caney, Tx)
Gracie Barra Oceanside (CA),
Carlson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (CA),
Subfighter Jiu-jitsu (CA)
Extreme Power Gym (CA)
10th Planet Oceanside (CA)
10th Planet Vista (CA)
Gracie Jiu Jitsu (Denver, Co)
...and several more not even worth mentioning.
Of all of these schools, THIS SCHOOL in Spring Texas is BY FAR the best one that I've been to. I've trained at over 30 different gyms in 17 years since 2001 across 4 different states (CA, TX, CO, KY), and I truly believe this is the best one I've trained at.
No, I'm not drinking the Gracie Kool Aid, I actually do more of the kickboxing/cardio, Boxing, and Muay Thai classes, so this is a completely unbiased review. THESE GUYS ARE LEGIT!!
ALL of their coaches are current or former fighters. ALL of their coaches and fighters have competed at the highest levels of their sport. Whether that be professional kickboxing, muay thai, mma, IBJJF, NAGA, etc. One of the owners of the gym is a CURRENT UFC Competitor and his entire team that prepares him for his fights, is also apart of the instructor staff here at this location! So when I take a kickboxing or muay thai or jiu-jitsu class, I am learning from actual coaches that have been to the UFC, and I get to train under the head coach that is still fighting in the UFC!
I would say there is nothing wrong with taking your kid to a karate school McDojo at the stripmall next to a petsmart, where the head instructor is 100 lbs overweight, and he's a copy machine salesman during the day, and an 8th Degree Grand Master Black Belt in Bullshido Ryu at night, BUT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THAT!!!! DONT DO IT!!! If you want to learn self defense, or if you want to get into shape, if you want to learn how to fight, or just have fun learning a new hobby and gaining martial technique along the way, THEN LEARN FROM A FIGHTER! Come here and learn from these guys. You wouldn't want to learn how to shoot a gun from someone that's never shot a gun before would you? But you would want to learn from someone that gets paid to shoot guns at the highest levels of competition. These guys are the best in all of Houston, and in my opinion, the best in All of Texas.
The NITTY GRITTY...
Cost $$: The prices are considerable to all the other gyms in California, that are run by pro-fighters. So you will pay a tiny bit extra for the top notch level of instruction that you will be receiving... you get what you pay for just like anything else.
Gym Cleanliness: They mop the matts several times a day!! It looked like all the kickboxing equipment was disinfected on a daily basis as well.
Amenities: They have a full size men's and women's bathrooms with showers and toilet/stalls! They have 2 water fountains just incase you forget your bottle of water everyday like me! They have lots of bleachers for parents to sit on while their kids are training, and they now have a kickboxing/cardio class during the kids class, for parents that want to get their exercise in while their kids are training instead of waiting in the car.
Other Pros: They have a pro-shop you can buy your gear from, but they dont force you to buy their gear, they let you bring your own gear!!
Staff: Super Friendly, personable, non-threatening, no ego
Students: Several Dozen Adults, Several Dozen Teens, Several Dozen Kids EVERY DAY. So LOTS of opportunity to roll and train with new people everyday, including beginners professional fighters alike.
Location: Right next door to a great Asian food place, and mexican food, Caijun food, and American Pizzeria & Beer. I love picking up some food from Asia Garden next door after my workout on Fridays.
Cons: Haven't found any yet. Great place to train.
