I am a big fan of Michael Hill, both in the products that they offer and the service that they offer their customers. I bought my wife's engagement ring and both wedding rings at Michael Hill. However, I would suggest that you shop at your own peril at the location in Woodgrove Mall. The service there is abysmal and the staff does not instill confidence. We dropped off my wife's engagement ring to be rhodium-plated, 2 weeks before we got married so that it would look its best for our wedding day. In hindsight, we should have taken it to another location, but we were getting married on the North Island and the only other locations on Vancouver Island are in Victoria.
The staff at the Woodgrove Mall, do not give you the impression that they are organized or competent. After leaving the ring with Michael Hill Woodgrove, we left worried that we wouldn't get the ring back, but felt we did not have a choice because we couldn't get to Victoria.
On another trip to Woodgrove, just prior to our expected pick-up date, we stopped in to see if it happened to be ready early. A Michael Hill staffmember proceeded to berate us for even asking about the ring before they had phoned us (to notify us that it was ready). We only asked if it was ready (it wasn't like we were demanding the ring).
A couple days later, we received a phone call that the ring was ready to be picked-up. However, when we arrived the store (during mall hours) it was all closed-up. Granted, it appeared that the store was in the middle of a move between two locations in the mall. What I don't understand, is why the staff did not give us any instructions on how to pick-up the ring when the store was closed. I had to bang on the metal curtain that closed up the storefront to get the attention of staff inside. I finally got the ring back, before being shooed away. Staff made me feel like a nuisance for picking up the ring, eventhough they called us for a pick-up and our wedding was the next day. Throughout every interaction we had with staff at this Michael Hill, their service left so much to be desired. I am sure that this is not representative of Michael Hill's brand, as I've visited a half dozen other locations and never experienced this kind of service.
Last but not least, we've had a couple problems with the ring since it was returned to us. We've had the ring inspected every 6 months in accordance with the Michael Hill service plan. The most recent one was in April (we're not due for another one for another couple months). Yet, a week after we got the ring back, one of the channel diamonds fell out, and was lost.
Also, most of the ring is White Gold, but a small portion was Rose Gold. When we picked up the ring after being Rhodium-plated, the Rose-Gold portion no longer has its unique color and is indistinguishable from the rest of the White Gold. Rather than discussing these problems with Michael Hill Woodgrove, I feel better about waiting until I can visit another location that I am familiar and confident with.
Very disappointed!
