Wow, I can't believe what I witnessed today. An old friend of mine (86 years old) took his car into Maaco for a respray. His car is a 2001, the paint is old, so he and his wife decided to paint it, actually, he loves his car and refuses to get a new one, so his wife wanted to have it freshened up. The completed Maaco spray job was fair at best for a collision shop, but nowhere near as nice as factory or even an average run of the mill repair shop. I am from southern California (car capital of the world) and have restored many classic cars, So I know automotive repair, prep and paint.
This particular Maaco location charged my friend for sanding, and ding repairs, and general prep, but upon inspection of the finished product, one corner of the rear bumper looks as if they neglected to repair some fissures (area big as a softball) in the previous finish before spraying. But upon even a closer look, it looks as if they actually did do the repair before paint, but the materials they used ultimately affected the top coat (burned through). The car had only this 1 major flaw after painting besides the poor masking job, makes you think? It looked as if they used a incompatible primer, didn't use a sealer in that area, then sprayed the top coat. Maybe it was re repaired just before paint and that's why the issue. Only they know the true story.
Once the flaw was discovered and brought to their attention, they refused to take responsibility. In fact the guy who runs the front counter must be related to Mister Magoo, because he couldn't see it no matter how many times my friend pointed to the flaw. The owner was worse, wanting to charge extra to repair his shop's mistakes. I could tell from the street view upon arriving, this shop had issues (sloppy, dirty, unorganized), too little too late. The lesson here, is read the fine print first, ask questions first, look at a shops other paint jobs on other's cars before hiring them. If it was me, I would go elsewhere. Pay a little more at a good shop, you will be happier in the end. If it's cheap, there's a reason.
It would appear from the poor quality and the even worse customer service, that the owner and his management, is not in business to serve the customer, but in business to serve their bank account(s), and no business will succeed on those principals.
There used to be a shop named Earl Scheib, they did really poor quality, cheap paint jobs ($29.95 when I was a kid) for customers that didn't know any better. They are now gone. Or are they?
08/15/ 2017 Update.
Maaco after much coaxing by my friend but mostly his wife, they are willing to fix their mistakes at their own cost. So to summarize, Maaco originally argued they would not fix their mistakes without additional cost to the car owner, but eventually did the right thing and fixed the flaws of the paint job at their expense. I still stand by my above review. Find a better shop or you probably will have regret.
