I have not engaged Shorty's services, so I cannot comment on the quality of their actual work. But based on a recent interaction I can say I will not be using them in the future.
It is a fairly common practice for service companies (of any sort) to add markup to supplied parts; sometimes substantial markup. What is not common is to be so set on overcharging a customer that a company refuses to install a product the customer already has; especially so when the product is brand new (still sealed in the box), comes with a full warranty and is one of THE top names in the industry. This is the case with Shorty's. It was like they expected me to return the item so they can buy it then charge me more for it. Ridiculous and unacceptable.
Fortunately, there are many plumbers in this city and I will happily engage one that conducts itself in a more appropriate manner.
Response to the owner: Thank you for taking the time to comment on my review. I am very sorry that you found my 'policy' of not dealing with companies that are going to dictate what I can and cannot use disconcerting. As the homeowner and the one paying the bill, it is my right to choose what I want installed. Fortunately, there are companies that respect that right. Furthermore, if the person I spoke to had bothered to ask, they would have found out that the new product I have is in fact contractor grade, is the exact same model as was provided by the previous plumber years ago (at a sizable markup) and has worked flawlessly for 10 years.
While I am always open to a service provider suggesting alternatives, I find it patronizing that a business puts a restrictive policy in place to ostensibly 'protect' the customer from themselves.
Obviously, we have VERY different perspectives on your policy. At least it is now out in the open for anybody looking at your reviews to decide if they want to be 'protected' from themselves and overpay or not.
Second response to owner: it is not the least bit misleading. First, it was a commercial grade pump purchased at a store that serves plumbers. Second, you are one of the few service providers (of any sort) that I have ever encountered in Winnipeg that refuse to install a brand new part unless you buy it. As if it magically becomes something different just because you bought the same part. I know. I'll take the part back and have you buy it from the exact same plumbing store and see if it magically becomes more reliable (sarcasm). Third, I have post factum checked the prices on products provided by service providers rather than myself in the past and have seen that there is in fact mark up; sometimes substantial. This hardly an uncommon practice. This is why I took the time to buy the part myself. Fourth, the person from your company I spoke to did a VERY poor job of explaining your policy and at one point said all she knows is it is company policy and she wants to keep her job! I would suggest it is you who is being misleading. Rather than trying to gloss over the issue for reputation sake, perhaps you should reconsider your policy. Anyway, you will undoubtedly reply with another 'spit and polish' response. I have no desire whatsoever to call or deal with a company like this (even less than before your last response, if that was possible).
