This small hidden gem is amazing! The bar was fully stocked and the restaurant had windows everywhere even looking into the kitchen. We shared an apple and endive salad and ordered arctic char and gnocchi and finished it off with a chocolate sea salt mousse. It was really good. I suggest you call make a reservation online and or phone them if you want a table. I'd definitely be going back.

This restaurant is a real jewel of Nanaimo. The food is excellent: beautifully presented and always perfectly cooked. Hilltop, while upscale would be double the price in any major city... very complex dishes with obvious time spent on aesthetics. As another rare feature the staff is very skilled...it must be difficult to find servers of this calibre.. but they know their wines and pairings and can bounce seamlessly between friendly and familiar to elegant attentive and non-obtrusive.

Heard the hype and was keen to try the place. Warm welcome while the table was prepared. Several beers to try before I found one I liked. Small menu but enough to tempt. Pate to start and a steak for main. Bits of the steak were inedible, chewy. I had it medium rare so no excuse. Not silly prices but value not great. Would I return, probably not.

If you want to taste art - this is the place! Food here cannot be described with words. How do you define something you haven't had before? Hilltop Bistro focuses on quality and experience which a lot of restaurants have lost touch on (most restaurants these days focus on maximum profit = more customers = more money). If you have a special occasion coming up, you'll fall in love with this place :)

The Hilltop Bistro, nestled in a lovely forested area right on Rutherford Road, is a culinary class act. The atmosphere and decor is refined and pleasant with light jazz in the background and the aromas of fine cuisine in the air. Do make reservations. They are quite busy and you really don't want to be disappointed like that. The culinary expertise and their table service is absolutely top shelf. Every course we had went the extra distance to push it over the top into a gastronomic delight. Their pate is as light as a cloud and practically disperses on your tongue in a burst of flavour. An amazing experience. Their albacore tuna appetizer is much more sizable than I had expected. That's not a complaint. It was perfectly balanced in flavour, with the savoury, salty, acidic and sweet components playing a slightly but noticeably different little tune on your taste buds with every bite. The Butcher's Steak was cooked to perfection and I must concur with our server that it was one of the most savoury and flavourful cuts of beef I've ever enjoyed. Dessert was light and delicious. The attention to detail in plating their creations is a study in how to get it right. Everyone at my table greatly enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to another visit. Magnificent.
