Very funny place to have right in the middle of Portola Valley. Atmosphere is a "I just got off work at the lumber mill and want to have a beer" sort of casual vibe. Beer selection is fine (mix of American domestic, craft, and mass market import), but nothing special.

If you go there, count your change. This grouchy manager gave me $3 in change for $100. The bill for food was about $15. Before I gave him the $100 I asked him if he could break the bill and showed it to him. He nodded yes. When I told him I gave him $100 bill he denide it. I made him check the cash register and there was my $100. He said it was a mistake and gave me $60 plus the $3. That means he charged me $37 instead of $15. Unfortunately, I was so shocked, I didn't catch his second mistake. This place is old, and very tired. The new management has made it worse. You pay for your food in one location in the restaurant and then you have to pay another person for you drink. The food is at best, mediocre. I'm not telling you this guy is crooked, but if you must eat here, count your change. As for me, a customer of Alpine Inn for many years, I don't trust the new management , the place is grubby and I won't go again.

Old school beer hall. Nothing fancy, but great beer options. It looks like they had a kitchen, but we did not eat. Also, I think there was an outdoor garden, but were there in winter. Why am I leaving a review then? The bartenders were super friendly.

The only way you're going to enjoy this place is if you used to be a member of the Stanford Marching band. Many old timey band members were in the courtyard huffing and puffing on beat up horns and wind instruments that looked like they were school issued and never returned. The place overall all is so dilapidated I wonder if they're just being ironic, which seems a more likely and a typically expected self-righteous excuse for its poor condition. I've seen better kitchens in prisons and the food quality hovers just near the standards of your average correctional facility. Somehow the beer was cold, probably due to the sun having just set an hour earlier. The only thing better than leaving here was getting home and taking a white hot shower.

Relaxed grungy environment. Carved up tables, writing on the walls, stickers all over. Lots of outside seating. Decent food. Nice service. No table service, you order and pay at the counter. Nice location where you can hear birds outside. Bring a sweater as it can get cold.
