If you are visiting John’s Pass, in the mood for seafood and don’t feel like sitting down at a bar I suggest you check out Walt’z Fish Shak. The menu is based on their catch of the day so it can change daily.  There menu selection is small but each item is focused on and made to perfection. I started with their soup then ordered crab cakes with slaw and rice. My husband ordered the blackened grouper with salad. They were both DELICIOUS! These were probably the best crab cakes I ever ate! When they came out I was a little disappointed with the size but once I started eating the disappointment faded. Most crab cakes are stuffed with bread crumbs and greasy, these were stuffed with crab and had great texture. Their unsweetened iced mango tea went great with the meals. Pros: Delicious, Fresh Food Good Service One of the few restaurants in the area that isn’t a bar   Cons: A little pricey... but it is in a tourist destination Cash Only

Waltz, not many places like Waltz still exist , Fresh fish ! Family owned, When they are out of fish they are closed. Charming little cottage converted into a local seafood restaurant , you cannot compare any other experience with Waltz, if you don’t appreciate what they do then go down the beach and eat somewhere else. Fresh fish means the fish was caught, and served within a few days max, same day in most cases. Only a few establishments serve fish in this manner. Most places serve frozen fish, Cisco fish etc, most places. So if you like casual atmosphere , A nautical whimsy key west style, kinda set in their ways ownership that serves fresh local catch cooked and prepared the way they think that particular species of fish should be spiced and served married too the slaw or salad they suggest. and your willing to pay for this rare treatment and all of it’s working parts, then Waltz is a must. The rest of you out of town fools go buy your dinner in some tourist trap.

Underwhelmed. Maybe it was because we went on a Tuesday which is the first day they are open after 2 days off. For $16 we had the Key West pink shrimp appetizer - a bit rubbery and a only 10 shrimp. For $31 each we also had the Black Grouper, grilled, and the Red Snapper, blackened. Both were on the dry side and the grouper was a little under seasoned. The side of rice and beans and the other of coleslaw were not bad, but for the price I expected better. Also I would not recommend sitting outside - the tables are near the sewer which smells, well, of sewage.

Unfortunately I have to give them 1 star. This place deserves no stars. My friend was in from out of town and we decided to go to Waltz. Had been there in the past and it was fine. We both ordered the conch chowder which was horrible, tasted like a can of chili pepper was dumped into it. Needless to say after on spoonful neither of us could eat it. The server promptly removed the two full bowls of chowder. We had fish cakes and slaw which were both mediocre. When the bill arrived we inquired about the uneaten bowls of soup being charged. The server said she would have to speak to the manager. No problem, that’s when the problem started. Over came the brutes of brutes, with a scowl on her face she more or less told us the soup is great, I told her not for me. She actually argued that we should think it was good. I use to be in the restaurant business and I would never argue with a customer especially if they didn’t eat the food. Whatever, just paid the bill and left. It doesn’t end here. She cornered us outside of the restaurant and began yelling at us how Walt is from key west and that is how conch chowder taste because Walt knows.I beg to differ but since he is from Key West (don’t know if that’s good or bad)he has to be right. This brute needs to attend anger management classes and learn to be a civilized person when speaking to others. She had the nerve to tell my guest (because she had a Boston jacket on), “ all you Bostonians are the same, you come here. And know nothin” Well brute we will not be back and I hope every Bostonian and Fenway person stays clear of the brute at Waltz. ,

Well, they may have been a good place years ago... Now, they don't care about the quality of the food nor customer service. Normally I try anything twice, but reading the other reviews gives me no hope of a better outcome.
