We had a wonderful birthday dinner at Sam and Gabe's. Started off the thing fabulous Italian nachos appetizer that was almost worth the visit. Steaks were cooked perfectly and my wife had the lasagna which she was waiting to come back for from a previous visit. Overall though the best part of the meal was probably caramel apple crisp cheesecake. One of the best cheesecakes we've ever had. Thursday nights are live music night, so if you're into that you can enjoy some jazz. The building is big enough that we were able to sit on the other side so that we can enjoy conversation to celebrate the birthday. We will be back soon.

Excellent steaks... Fresh pasta... Menu changes regularly... Live music... One of our favorite date night spots. Gets a little spendy especially with drinks, so watch out for that.

Everyone in Des Moines talks about Sam and Gabe's so I thought I would try it after living here for 30 years. I have to say that if you are looking for great Italian food, look elsewhere. I ordered ravioli and was disappointed in the sauce and the sausage filling. Both were very bland with no Italian spices of any kind that I could taste. The sausage was not only bland but I swear I tasted a hint of cumin which is the last spice I would use in sausage for ravioli. If you go, expect high prices and if you want a salad, be prepared to pay an extra $5 or so - it's not included.

I went prior to a Bucs game and I wore nice jeans and a sweater. Our friends wore nice jeans and sweatshirts. We were sat in the corner of the lower dining room and our waiter was a complete snob. Food was great and the signature cocktail of the night was amazing but I couldn’t get past the service and never returned. I love me some Latin King, Baratta’s, or Tumea and Sons for Italian food so there is just no need to be made uncomfortable elsewhere.

Valentines dinner with my love was great. Or drinks rocked and dinner was awesome. The staff was friendly and our waitress was very helpful. Great place for a date and great food.
