I have dined at this restaurant many times over many years and it was always excellent. Coming in today, I recognized maybe 3 of the staff I have seen in the past. Maybe that was the problem. The hostess asked us to wait a moment when our party of 3 came in the door. She then proceeded to serve 3 more parties coming in, one that was even much larger than ours. We stopped one group and asked if they had reservations and they did not. When the hostess was spoken to about us not being seated she told us to wait and ignored us. Finally one of the waiters asked us why we had been standing there for so long and offered us a table, but by that time we had lost interest in dining out. I am very disappointed in Plaza Azteca and they need to make changes or they will lose a frequent diner.

3 based on the size of the meals, 1 star for sanitation. We stood for 10 minutes without anyone even greeting us or seating us, when the fellow came to greet is his unclean, unkempt appearance caught my eye immediately. He preceded to med with his nose before using the same hand to get our silverware which was roughly wrapped in a napkin. Ordering went smooth and food arrived in a timely manner, straws were already in our drinks though... Gross. A few moments later, the same unkempt guy pops around the corner, reaches over my food and slides a knife under the chicken on my plate, doing which put him uncomfortably close, right up in my personal space, literally 6" from my chest. He smelled of cologne bath. The food was okay, nothing special, just plenty of it. Several people complained while we were there about not being tended too. We will not be coming back. We are locals and this experience killed the possibility of making this a place to go for food. Sanitation rating on the wall was only a 95, there were flies buzzing around and lighting on us while we were there.

Food was fast and good. Taco meat could stand a little seasoning. Rice was very good. Margaritas were excellent. Our bartender/waiter Edgar was friendly and efficient. Authentic look as well inside.

I love Mexican food, and I will scour the ends of the Earth until I find the perfect restaurant. However, in OBX, the first time was the charm! Plaza Azteca has friendly staff, amazing food, and stiff margaritas! I will definitely become a regular here!
