Have eaten here several times. The food is well prepared and very good. Portions large enough I always need a take out box. Great staff. Bar upstairs, but I have not used it.

Dinner for 2. Shoto is a Japanese Steakhouse & Seafood Restaurant where you can tailor your entree to your own liking. Everyone starts with 5 stars in my book, especially Shoto as their location was in a great spot - brownstone building, tucked between cute shops in a quaint downtown neighborhood. Parking was easy to find and the walk from down the street was pleasant. Walking in, the staff were friendly and quick to welcome us. Here's where stars begin to get deducted. Minus 1 star for a confusing menu. It was a "build-your-own-entree" deal where you pick your protein and then your style/sauce (there were like 15 styles!) and then your veggies and they stir fry it up for you. It was a sit down Mongolian grill type deal. Options are great, but too many options can be daunting sometimes. When a customer has to ask more than two questions about HOW to order, it's already a bad sign. Minus 1 star for the quality of food. The onion soup and house salad came out too quick. The salad was obviously pre-prepped and had been sitting on the counter for too long as the sliced carrots and salad pieces were slightly dried and shriveled. The onion soup was too salty - like it had been stewing too long and condensed. The steak in my stir fry was supposed to be medium cooked, but it was all well-done. Minus 1 star for the combination of food and overall "what-is-this!?" kind of deal. Everything was served with super sweet carrots by default. If I had known that, I would have asked for something else. The carrots just didn't make sense with the stir fry and fried rice. We also got some strange thousand island special sauce for dipping?? But I couldn't figure out if it was for the stir fry, or rice or carrots? Overall, it was a confusing experience. There was much left to be desired. I'm glad most people who go here liked it, but it was more frustrating than anything for me.

A little loud and tables are cramped and close together, not a great place for quiet conversation with your date. However food is good and portions are large. Popular local restaurant.

Shoto is such a gem of a place. Awesome location, killer upstairs bar and the food is just excellent. The menu is very clearly laid out, where you choose your protein and can pair it with a variety of veggies and sides and a starch. There are certain things Japanese dives have to nail...and Jimmy and Co. sweat the small details; the shrimp sauce, the clear onion soup, the attention to detail on the appetizers, and even the decor: it's all perfection. If you're wanting something really indulgent, ask for the firecracker chicken or shrimp: it's breaded and fried to perfection, and it's drizzled with what I think is some sort of spicy mayo. It's so stinking good. If you're up for a longer night, be sure to hit up Jimmy's bar upstairs, the cocktails redefine handcrafted and a lot of love goes into them, much as it does in everything else here. Highly recommended.

We frequent Shotos pretty regularly (once every week or two) and the food is generally good. Tonight was different. The food took an exceptionally long time to come out, and when it did one member of our party found a hair fried into his chicken! Not stuck but fried into it! No problem things happen, however the waitress then took the entire offending item back not leaving anything for our friend to eat. They returned after a long time with the food, however at this point we we're done eating so our friend asked if it could be boxed togo because it had taken so long. When asked if the food could be compensated they said because they had remade it they would have to take the entire plate that had not been eaten back in order to compensate it. This was terribly tacky since he had no food to eat the entire time we were there waiting in the food to be made right. For a customer service industry this shouldn't happen over some chicken tenders.
