I came to Melting Pot for my boyfriend's birthday. I called 2 weeks in advance and made a reservation for 6. Upon calling, they asked if it was for a celebration and I told them a birthday. They asked for the birthday person's name and said they would get the table ready. They never explained what that meant, just said that the table would be ready for us. A couple days before our reservation, one of the couples who had planned to go had something come up and could no longer attend. When I called to change the reservation from 6 to 4, the woman who answered the phone asked me why I even made a reservation for 6 if there were only 4 of us, even after I explained that our friends could no longer go, and was very rude on the phone. Now fast forward to the day of our reservation, we show up and have chocolate and cheese. The bill comes after dinner and is $20 more than I had expected. They had charged me $20 for BALLOONS AND A CARD. The card didn't even say anything except "Happy birthday" inside. The lady who made our reservation NEVER ONCE told me that I would be paying $20 for balloons that we didn't even take with us. When I mentioned this to the waitress, she had me speak to the manager. The manager was probably the one who made this whole experience so bad. She ensure that I "probably wasn't listening" and that they "must have told me". When I ensured her that they did NOT tell me about the added cost of like 6 little balloons, she said she would not help us and I was forced to pay the extra $20 and we didn't even want the balloons. Not a good experience.

Wow! What awesome service. Our servers Jerry and Bryan we're excellent. They were attentive and made us feel very comfortable and pampered. It was our first time (however not our last) as the food was also excellent. Thank you for making our last night in Portland memorable. My grand daughter, daughter, and I loved it.

I've read a lot of reviews about how terrible the service is here, but that was not my experience at all. It might be different depending on the time of day or if they are short staffed though. We were waited on from the time we arrived til we left by our waiter Billy, who did a great job. The manager even walked around to each table making sure everything was satisfactory. The food was delicious and overall it was a very fun experience for my girlfriend and I.

So when we sat down it took quite a bit to have our server come take a drink order or offer water, we did have a manager come when we had first sat with our menu to offer answers to any questions we had, but we had just sat and hadn't gotten any look at the menu, but no one return for a bit after. That was not so much of the issue we had with our experience. We didn't want to do the course meal and just decided to choose a cheese for the 3 of us so it wasn't a $100 bill. It was $12 per person for the Wisconsin cheddar, served perfectly to us and described great. But the issue comes when we paid $36 for one small bowl of cheese, 2 small bowls of bread and 2 small trays of veggies and apple... The 3 of us were starving, and ate it and my $7 small plate salad in literally about 5 minutes. We where unsure if we could get anymore but where quickly moved on to asking if we wanted desert. After spending that much on a handful (of nice cheese), a half an apple, 3 small carrots, 4 small pieces of celery, and 3 cherry tomato (one having black spots), we couldn't imagine paying twenty something for another small portion leaving us hungry when we left. Service was okay once the server came, and nice place, but man your margin is great if you are really charging that much for such small portion. Unimpressed mother in law and I certainly don't know why I would go back to pay a large amount and be hungry leaving.

The Melting Pot has been our favorite special occasion dinner choice since before they moved from SW into downtown. They know us when we call, and have a record of our favorite wines (this is major because I can never remember them). Whenever The Amazing JD is working, he is our server. Even if months have passed since our last visit, he greets us like regulars, often remembering our preferences, and always taking a moment to be social. This adds an "old school" familial flare to the occasion, which we love! Thank you for doing what you do, and we will always be back!
