We came to Santiago's after finding out that they were participating in the first-ever Yakima Valley restaurant week. We've driven by the place a lot, but given the vast amount of delicious Mexican food in the area, we never found a reason to make the stop. After our experience here, this will probably work its way into our nicer Mexican food rotation.
I also want to give the owners here a shout out for participating in the valley's first restaurant week. They're a spot that was excited about participating and gave everybody an opportunity to try a dish that was really phenomenal!
Located on Yakima Avenue, Santiago's has been here for a long time and definitely serves a solid niche within the Mexican food hierarchy. It's a spot you go where you're going to pay $15-$20 per person and you want a nice sangria along with dinner. Definitely not the spot to go when you're looking for street tacos or a sopita, but a good place to look for some higher in Mexican food.
The place has a cool vibe as soon as you walk in. Just to the right is the bar area where there are some large murals of what I assume are people from Mexican culture. I wasn't familiar, but you don't need to know the history to appreciate the beauty of the murals.
The place is set up with lots of booths around the outside and a few tables in the middle of the restaurant. We got to sit in a booth that was quite fun as it straddled both sides of the restaurant. It was fun for the little gentleman to be able to see what was going on both places.
The drink menu includes what is claimed to be one of the largest tequila selections in America. They have 250+ tequila options that range from a few dollars per shot up to $50 or $60 per shot. It was very impressive! I tried a $10 sipping tequila and it was quite lovely!
For dinner they have a kids menu - one of our little guys got a taco with rice and beans and the other felt like it was a fish and chips night. Both of them were good portions and the food was solid... even the fish and chips.
My wife and I split a couple of other dishes that were phenomenal. The steak picado was deliciously marinated steak served over rice and beans with healthy serving of guacamole and sour cream. That was as good of a steak dish as I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. We also split a dish that I think exemplifies the valley in the creativity of a lot of restaurants - the Yakima apple pork Molé! It's their traditional Molé with apples from the valley incorporated into it. It's a much sweeter version than the normally hearty and deep sauce that accompanies the dish. The cinnamon tones were delightful and there's just enough cocoa to really make the thing play on your tongue. I had heard about it, but until then I had never experienced it... This is definitely something I will be experiencing again!
The place was not overly busy at 5 PM on Wednesday, so we found the service to be spectacular. Our server was there the right amount of the time, but also give us some family time which was nice. They struck a really nice balance and it was noted.
All said and done, this adds to an already long list of really good Mexican food spots in the area. The Yacama apple pork Molé is as classic of a dish as we have found it is something that will be telling people about for a long time. This is a great nicer Mexican food restaurant in the spot where you'll spend a little more, but you definitely get quality for what you're paying for.Absolutely worth checking out!
