Southern Rail is located in a redevelopment called the Newton. In addition, the complex houses community spaces, Southwest Gardner, and First Draft bar inside Changing Hands Bookstore. You can easily make an afternoon of wandering around, reading eating and enjoying libation. Thanks for the owners that took this old empty shell and gave this gift to the community. Now, about the restaurant itself... Cocktails aplenty and tasty ones at that. The menu is a creative take on southern comfort food. I enjoy the sampler and dirty rice balls whole hanging out on the awesome patio. The food is pleasing, well prepared and presented. If you like southern food this will be a great fit for you.

Great food and good service too! It’s really loud in there, had to shout at my date. We couldn’t hear each other talk. It is pricey. The sweet tea is awesome, but don’t drink too much of it else you’ll be awake for days. I’d give them 5 stars if it was a bit more quiet in the dining area. It’s a better place for lunch then dinner. Awesome lunch menu.

Visited on a Friday at lunch and it wasn't too crowded. Service was good. The decor is a bit more elegant than I would have expected for a restaurant with Southern cuisine, as was the presentation of the food. Unique take on Southern food and I would definitely return for dinner or happy hour as well as for lunch. The only thing I thought was odd was that you can add chicken to salads and other meals but the chicken was primarily dark meat. It was flavored well so I didn't mind, but usually adding chicken usually means chicken breast.

My wife and I shared the fried chicken and burger. The chicken was cooked perfectly. The battery was crunchy yet delicate. The one knock I have against the chicken was that it was a bit under seasoned. I wish it were a little bit spicier. The burger was very tasty even though it had a little too much mustard. Overall it tasted like an In n' Out burger mashed with a Big Mac. That's a good thing.

I love this place! My book club had a session here once and they were able to accommodate about 8 people. And also have really great outdoor seating with a gas fireplace that you can sit around. The drinks are unique and tasty as well.
