First time here and new to Arizona. Came with my husband and young children and the owner was very friendly, engaging my young sons and speaking Yoruba to my husband. The atmosphere of this place took me way back to my Dad's Foreign Service years when he dragged us all around central and Eastern Africa..... great times! Anyway, I came in with that dry desert cough and the food here was just what the doctor ordered..... lol..... I started with their delicious Ginger drink which soothed my throat right away...... only God knows what is in that thing but its amazing! Next we had the whole grilled Tilapia and Chicken which we got with the spicy Sauce. All VERY delicious especially the fish. What else can I say? Cozy ambience and great food! You won't be disappointed.

Unassuming in the extreme, Alafia is a hidden (literally: don't be put off by the restaurant's absence of a bright storefront and its look of a neighborhood dive bar) gem of Tucson. Chef-owner Ismael Lawani, originally of Beinin, West Africa, is a friendly giant of a man who knows his fufu (viscous cassava, yam and plantain porridge) and cassava couscous as well as his goat in groundnut sauce and fried fish in moyo sauce (tomatoes and onions). I asked Ismael who taught him to cook: his mother, of course, he laughed. And so the food tastes: home-style delicious. Alafia is also a meeting place of African expatriates and other far-flung travellers, so be ready to make new acquaintances and even friends. I met an African tennis pro and a Canadian mother-daughter pair. And check out Ismael's huge necklace ornaments. Most of all, come to taste some of the diversity of Tucson as it is, not as it advertises itself to tourists and snowbirds.

I thought the food was acceptable. I got the half chicken with plantains which ended up being two large chicken legs. The part I didn't like was they have a sign that says lunch special $5.99 from 11am to 3pm which I arrived between those times.Unless I misinterpreted the menu, I ended up getting charged $22 even after clearly repeating my order. I didn't say anything to avoid the awkwardness for those $10 that I believe I was overcharged for.
