I really wanted to like this place. The woman at the desk was extremely friendly and pleasant but unfortunately the food was otherwise. I order the deluxe gyro and my husband got the beef kabob. Upon opening my food container I noticed the meat inside was this odd grayish color and it was cut into perfect rectangles. I was a little worried but tried it out anyway. I took a bite and it was pretty bad. Very strange flavor, I just couldn't eat it. It got thrown away. My husband did really care for his plate as well. We won't be going back.

Great food, great service. Don't pay attention to reviews suggesting rudeness here. Staff is perfectly polite and competent. Excellent restaurant

I seriously don't get all the positive reviews for this place. It's awful. We got there and the place was empty,on a Friday night, not a good sign. The woman working the place had a very disheveled appearance, seemed annoyed by having to help us. Once we sat down and looked at the menus my immediate instinct was to leave but I didn't want to be unfairly superficial and the place has so many positive reviews. The menus were dirty and covered in hand written changes. Prices crossed out, menu descriptions changed scribbled out, the menus where nearly illegible. My friend and I both ordered the beef kabob plate which said it was $9.95 each, and according to both the menu and the woman who took our order included beef kabob, rice, salad, grilled vegetables and flat bread. I asked if the beef could be cooked rare and the woman seemed upset by my question and stated that "most people want it well done, but rare if you want it". It took forever for our food to come out, and while waiting we were treated to the sounds of the woman and man in back I suspect her husband fight loudly. We had the pleasure of listening to them scream at each other in the kitchen on and off the whole time we were there. Our food comes out both kabobs were cooked beyond well done to the point that the edges were black. I'm also almost positive they're using precooked meat and just re grilling it. It was tough dry and barely seasoned . The salad was good, but some of the lettuce in it was wilted and old. The rice was bland and clearly a box mix, and the flat bread and grilled vegetables never came, I asked and the woman just pretended not to hear me. At this point I just wanted to leave. The check came to $27 dollars and wasn't itemized ,again I just wanted out and didn't feel like arguing with these people even though we were paying nearly $30 and didn't get half the meal we were promised and got to listen to an angry old couple argue the whole time we were there. But the best part is that shortly after having left I started getting a headache and feeling nauseous. When I got home I started throwing up and when I woke up this morning I now have a red rash on my face . I don't process msg and other harsh preservatives well so now I'm positive their meat is precooked and there rice is cheap box mix. I doubt anything there is house made. As sick as I've been I'm seriously thinking about reporting them to the health department. All these reviews on how fresh and amazing and authentic this place is have all you people never had kabob or Mediterranean food before ? It's like saying Taco Bell reminds you of that mom and pop taco place you love in Tijuana. Although comparing pita house to Taco Bell is really unfair to Taco Bell, at least T. B. has a clearly marked menu and prices and gives you an itemised receipt. Unless you have a cast-iron stomach and love getting ripped off steer clear of Pitiful House.

I have been trying to find Falafel everywhere in Bakersfield and this is the place! Hummus was super good! The Lamb on the Gyro was so tender and delicious! Great service and the staff was very friendly and nice!

I love this place. Food is always delicious, service is great. The lamb is my go-to. It's always tender & tasty. Mmmmm. $13 for lamb, rice, salad & pita bread I think is fair. Same plate with beef or chicken is about $11. The chains are about the same price so I'm not sure why people think it's pricey. I think it's pretty fair for better quality food. Add this to your must try list!
