We have eaten at Black Bear Diners all over the state of California and love them. The food and service are always very good and they are clean. Unfortunately, this was not the case with their Oakland restaurant. Our food and service were good but the restaurant was a mess. There was food on the floor, someone had spilled a drink in the ladies restroom and they gave our check to someone else and tried to get us to pay that person's check telling us is was about the same amount! I'm not kidding...after going around and around, we finally got the amount where we felt it should be but we never did get the correct receipt. We have learned our lesson that just because it says Black Bear Diner, doesn't mean we should expect a similar experience and we will never return to the Oakland restaurant again.

I would've given this place a 5 star but they missed the first rule of restaurant business.... The 10 foot rule. Acknowledge your guests as soon as they come into your venue. Two ladies were on the registers, one looked up a few time, made eye contact, but didn't say a word. Finally got sat, but it took more than 10 minutes to have someone help us with our order. One more minute and I would've left. But that didn't happen. After that, a lady came, and everything else was good. I know it was breakfast time and that means that it was busy. So I will be back soon.

Great location, great food, and great service. I understand why it's known for the food portions. I think that is what makes this restaurant from other diners. Other than the portions, it's pretty much the same. The environment is over-the-top. Bears everywhere. Cute! We enjoyed our family gathering here. I had enough left over to make two more meals. You might want to share an order if you are used to eating normal size meals.

Food was fine but my rental car was broken into, manager said it was the second one that day. Should have been told not to leave anything in the car; small sign by the door was not descriptive enough. Sign should say your car WILL BE BROKEN into if there is anything in there, not, make sure that valuables are out of sight; mine were.
