One must appreciate traditional Japanese in order to truly enjoy Katsu. Sit at the bar and enjoy the best quality fish this side of the Bay. There are a few Americanized rolls, but nothing beats the nigiri. Katsu-san's chicken wings are unforgettable and if you're lucky, he'll have a kama special. Enjoy with your choice Japanese beer and a glass of some fine cold sake. Katsu is truly a diamond in the rough. In business for decades, there hasn't been a lot of updating, but don't judge a book... Service can be slow at times, which is why sitting with the regulars at the bar is typically both entertaining and kills time.

Love this place and go here every time I'm in town. Been going here at least 20 years. Food and staff are always the best.

My student from Japan says YES! That tastes like home. Feels like home. The owners are from Japan.

Katsu restaurant is AWESOME the sushi is ALWAYS fresh and Katsu himself will make the dish for your dietary requirements (of course if that is possible). ALWAYS welcoming with a friendly smile.

Castro Valley has the highest concentration of restaurants with very low food quality compensated with friendly service. I’d compare the food here to mall food. Made with the very basic ingredients and the least care. No creativity and flavors what so ever. I really don’t understand why people open restaurants just want to make mediocre food.
