Duarte's is a classic seafood diner on the coast that has been around for years and is still a favorite. The food is well made, tasty, and fresh- made with local ingredients, including vegetables from their own garden. Interior is funky and casual. The wait on weekends and holidays can be extremely long as there is not much else in the area of this quality. Prices have risen quite steeply in recent years and service is not as good; although the food quality is pretty much the same.

This place is great! As we arrived, one of the waiters was checking on a departing patron to make sure he wasn't driving (you don't see that kind of care much these days). We were seated immediately, but reservations would be a good idea; by the time we left the place was packed. The atmosphere was Old California, but not at all kitschy; antique wooden tables and gorgeous wood paneled walls. We started with fresh squeezed apple juice, which was AMAZING. The raw oysters we had as an appetizer were superb, as was the fresh baked sourdough bread, still hot from the oven. I had the fried oysters with Mexican coleslaw and mashed potatoes, and my wife had the calamari steak sandwich, both of which were done to perfection. Our waiter Sean was attentive without hovering, and clearly enjoys what he does. The entire staff was friendly, courteous, and eager to please; my water glass never got below half full without someone topping it off. I can't recommend Duarte's highly enough!

We arrived at about 3:45PM on a Sunday afternoon. We didn't have reservations and were told we might have to wait 25 minutes or so. We were seated in less than 10 minutes. It seemed kind of busy, I had to park about a block away. It is a few different things: a nice restaurant, a busy fun bar, a local icon and hangout. Inside it is a bit of a maze but that makes charming and obviously not a corporate boring chain. There were two of us, one ordered that french dip and the other the abalone dinner. Both were not just good very good!! The french dip was not only tastey and very tender. The abalone was the best I've had in literally in decades! The wait staff was friendly, attentive, and efficient. Highly recommended and I want to go back!

Great warm bread with butter for starters! Mussel soup was a delicious appetizer. I had the abalone sandwich which was good but not great for $25 but now I have tried abalone. I imagine that the calamari sandwich would have been as good for $10 less? Then again we were there for the experience. Best part was taking home the lullaberry? pie!

Once we were able to figure out how seating worked, we waited to get a seat at the bar since it was a 45 minute wait at 3pm on a Saturday. After 20 minutes we got a seat at the bar. The people who left offered us the last of their wine. We accepted and the bar tender gave us one glass and never offered us other drinks or water....apparently saying yes to the person before offering you their wine is not the appropriate answer.... we ended up ordering a crab sandwich, onion rings and artichoke soup to share. Although the food came out quickly, the soup was cold, the onion rings were over done and the crab sandwich tasted like the crab should’ve been thrown out about six days ago. Now just hoping I don’t get sick from the meal. Not sure why people rave about this place, spent $40 to walk away frustrated, unsatisfied and hoping that I’m not throwing up later. The only reason this place even gets 2 stars is because the wine the people before me left was quite good and the food was quick. I would never ever come back here or suggest it to another person that has taste buds that work.
