I've been coming to Mai Japanese for about 4 years now and the food is always delicious. I normally get the shrimp hibachi and it is always fresh and of good quality, which is very important to me. The Hot Lava roll is their best selling sushi roll and for good reason. It is not only super filling but also incredibly inexpensive. Also the staff here are very sweet. This place will always be home to me.

The food: I ordered The vegetable hibachi and my wife ordered the chicken hibachi. We also ordered the “devils roll” from their sushi menu. The hibachi was ok at best. The chicken was way over cooked and the vegetables were on the opposite end of the spectrum. The sauce was nearly flavorless without the help of the soy sauce they had on the tables. The sushi was below average, the roll was put together sloppily and fell apart as I tried to pick it up with the chopsticks. The fish inside of the sushi was sub par as well almost flavorless(and no I’m not fighting any sinus problems right now). I personally will not be back due to many other options in the area that are above this in quality and equal in price. The Service: Much like the food the service was sub par. We had to wait around 5-7 minutes to be seated and the restaurant was almost empty when we arrived. We had to grab our own silverware off of other tables(some tables were set with silverware placements)

Quick service, great food. Don't have the Otoro high end tuna but do have some interesting rolls unique to them. Good flavors some of which will surprise you in a pleasant way.

To be honest the food was so-so, nothing to write home about... Service was ok. The seating and tables could be updated. Cleanliness was ok. Due to have eaten at some really fantastic Japanese/sushi restaurants throughout Charlotte, this would not be one of my top recommendation. But for reasonable prices and food portion(s) you get your monies worth.

There were a couple of small details keeping this from being a 5 star review, but none of it had anything to do with the flavor of the food or the service. The 4 rolls we ordered, the fried dumplings, and the eel and tuna sushi were all very good. The service was also on point throughout the meal, but that was helped by us sitting at the sushi bar. While not as polished as you might like to see for a place that serves raw dishes, the food and service were enough that we would probably come back again next time were craving Japanese. The prices are also VERY reasonable compared to other spots in town.
