I was only in Louisville for three days and ate breakfast at Verbena Cafe twice because it was so good. Their staff is friendly, service is quick, and food is amazing. I would highly recommend if you’re in the area!

Lovely venue. Friendly staff. Good food (typically). Only complaint was that the potatoes could have been cooked longer and the food was cold. Beautiful presentation though and, overall, a pleasant experience.

Beware of Mike, son of the owner. Not much of a professional. Certainly has an anger management problem. My wife and I were thrown out of the cafe because the kitchen closed at 1:45, although the cafe closed at 2. Okay, I get it, but the staff didn't know that apparently, since they tried to seat us. We left the cafe. I returned however to get the name of the owner and a telephone number. At that point Mike appeared from behind the scenes affirming that he was the owner and yelled at me to get out of the store and never come back again. I explained that we lived a block away and were frequent customers. He continued to yell. At one point he assaulted me. I told him if he touched me I would have him arrested. We left and called the police to report the incident. Unfortunately, the owners, who have done an excellent job of building this concept, lost it with us. The entire restaurant got to witness a screaming youth who doesn't know the first thing about customer service. How about, "I'm sorry." "May I help you?" "My name is..."

I go to the Verbena from time to time and always have a pleasant experience. Today ordered the Corned Beef Verbena Hash. I'm a big fan of the Verbena Browns which are a big part of this dish. A combination of shredded and cubed potatoes. I'm strictly a hash browns man but these are terrific and I make an exception to the rule at Verbena. For some reason, other than it being high noon and they were hella busy, the eggs supposed to be a topper arrived on a separate plate. However they were perfect and I didn't ask for a discount to place them on top myself. We were taken care of by the very capable Beth. She was low key and there at all the right times. My only complaint about the Verbena is the noise level. One look up at the ceiling tells the story. Looks like design by Keller & Associates ( as in Helen ). It is very high for no reason and nothing to absorb the sound but drywall and the HVAC system. This in no reflection on the Verbena but on the landlord. It's completely tasteless. The landlord should be giving the Verbena a monthly discount for irritating their customers.

Verbena seems to be a favorite for many area locals. On a Sunday they are quite busy. My review reflects the specials menu on the chalk board thinking that it would be a little different and faster. Apple pie waffles - bad choice. For an extra dollar over the regular menu waffles breakfast I expected something different than Apple pie filling dumped on regular waffles surrounded by a half can of whip cream. Stick with the regular menu you'll fair better.
