Been coming here for years and this place serves decent food. I only come here in the late hours of the night after going out. This place is open late and can super busy after the bars close. My family makes Vietnamese food too. The food is not bad but could be better. Four stars!

Before I even get to the food, let me just give a shout out to the absolute FRIENDLIEST staff I have ever encountered in life! I felt so welcomed and taken care of. They are all wonderful people. I was sitting at the bar and this guy came in and the server at the bar (even before the guy could speak) recited his order verbatim. When she left, the guy turned to me and said "how in the hell did she remember that!? I've only been here twice before!". That should give you an idea of how awesome these guys are. Now to the food... basically... I had to have a whole conversation with myself about why I could not eat anythig else or otherwise I would multiple by mitosis like Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory after eating too much. I just moved to Houston and this is officially at the top of my "Favourite Restaurants" list. Gonna be back again and again and again.

The waiter I had was half the fun. He was recommending food and describing their different textures and cooking techniques. I was out with a friend who doesn't have much ethnic foods where she's from, so he made the choices exciting comforting to try. That alone was enough to give a perfect rating, but then the food came out. The taste was classic, but done so beautifully that it feels fresh and new. Definitely one of the few restaurants I would recommend to anyone for most occasions.

Mai's is such a Houston institution that it's hard to objectively review it. And yet, things have changed. Mai's still has some of the best Vietnamese you will ever eat. I'm particular, the Salt-toasted Tofu and Luc Lac dishes are phenomenal. Drinks are great, from cocktails with lychee to the more traditional salted lemonade. The Vietnamese iced coffee is heavenly. Despite these high points, serving sizes have shrunk and prices keep going up. Mai's used to be the kind of place you'd take friends for a heaping helping of inexpensive late night comfort food and great conversation. Since the remodel, you might leave hungry. Perhaps worst of all, the complete lack of acoustic insulation makes the whole restaurant an echo chamber. You can't maintain a conversation with the person sitting across from you because of the noise. For all of these faults, Mai's remains a favorite--or at least, a fond memory. Hopefully, they will continue to iterate on a formula that had, until recently, successfully adapted to changing times.
