I used Pure Floors in late 2016 to refinish and patch my 100+ year old Douglas-fir floor. Nathan is a good communicator and he (unlike several other recommended floor people) was able to squeeze me into his schedule when I really needed my floors done before I moved into the newly bought home. Plus, he understood my desire to use a water-based product instead of the typical "Swedish" finish.
But I found out much later that the crew he used wasn't used to working with wood; they came from doing concrete floors, from what I gathered. I did not know it then, but they used a maple filler instead of a matching pine filler, so when they stained the wood, the filler didn't take up the stain the way the wood did, and the little bits of filler stood out like they were pieces of pale masking tape scattered around on the floor. They also left some dark streaks in the floor they said they couldn't get out, that they were original to the floor, but I discovered later as well that these can happen from grains of grit getting loose during the sanding process. They show up only when the stain is applied, but they can be avoided if you know what to look for while sanding. There were also a few spots where the stain was applied unevenly. Plus, the crew did not put down as many coats of the finish as I had opted for, or perhaps they put down the finish more thinly than is typical, because it felt and looked like a single coat, not the three I had paid for. I have cats who within a matter of days scratched through the floor surface and into the wood below the stain, which immediately looked funky. Of course no one can account for cats, and Nathan was willing to come back to put more coats on, which would maybe be helpful for further scratching. And I did get the impression he wanted me to be happy with the final product, but he had no remedy for the other problems and I thought it was just the nature of my old floors.
The scratches kept nagging at me, and I wanted to find out how to at least hide them better, so I went to a supplier for suggestions and ended up talking to another flooring contractor they recommended, who took a look and explained what all the flaws were, and that they could've all been avoided. I decided I wanted to remedy those flaws with this other contractor, who clearly knew more about each problem. I ended up having the floors redone entirely and they are now beautiful.
I told Nathan about the mistakes made and asked if he would be willing to refund even a part of the money I had paid Pure Floors for their work. At first, he did not reply. He told me later he did not receive my email about it. Then he asked for before and after photos and copies of the invoices and estimates from the new contractor. After all that, he decided he is unwilling to reimburse me. He says he should've been given the chance to fix the problems, but I had lost all trust in his team and did not wish to risk any further complications. (I also doubted he would have been willing to entirely redo the floors.) Plus, I didn't like that I had to find out from someone else that what I had accepted were just the qualities I had to live with, with such an old floor, had actually been preventable.
I appreciated Nathan's attention to detail in other respects, and his overall customer service was great through the original part of the process, plus he fitted me into his schedule and was willing to work on such old floors (some contractors were unwilling to). But I sure would have liked not having to refinish such old floors twice to get a final product I could be happy with. And I have ended up annoyed that I had to go back and forth with Nathan over this before he finally made it clear he will not refund me anything for his team's lack of knowledge.
I get the feeling the Pure Floors team has learned a lot since this job occurred, but I would not hire them for any future work based on this experience.
