Needs a lot of help workmanship 30%

Jun 19, 2017
If it were possible to give a minus 5 star rating, I would gladly do it. Read on to find out why. Mistreated Motor Home On June 29, 2015 we (wife, grandson, and I) started out on a vacation and got about 30 miles from home when the failure of the RIGHT front wheel bearings suddenly ended our much anticipated trip. After stopping off the road, I got out to see what had happened. The wheel hub was smoking. The hub plug had blown out and oil had been sprayed all over the side of the coach. I had it towed to Truck PM Plus on Taft-Vineland in Orlando where it had just been in for a brake job. I initially thought there might be a connection. I'm still very suspicious. It took two months to complete the repair which ended our vacation plans for 2015 because we have custody of our 7 year old grandson and he had to begin school. Only the right front bearings had failed, but to err on the side of caution the insurance adjuster recommended that both wheels be rebuilt. And, so they were. Travel over the next several months were trips to the beach. During the last beach trip I noticed the two of the leveling jacks were showing leaks. I decided to have them rebuilt by a servicing dealer in Lakeland. In Aug 2016 I was on I-4 headed for Lakeland when the LEFT Front bearings failed. (As stated they were rebuilt along with the Right.) The LEFT wheel was repaired at Truck PM Plus for the second time. Only 400 miles had been driven between the bearing replacement and failure. Fast forward to June 2, 2017, The coach is loaded and ready to start on a planned extended trip (2 1/2 months). We get as far as the FL/GA line (200 miles) and a very loud and sharp crack followed by high pitched squeal forced us to the side of the road again. The Front Right bearings had failed once more. Fortunately, they didn't catch fire as sometimes happens or cause the wheel to pull to the right and result in an accident. This is a very frightening event when it occurs. (The disappointment and anger come later.) My wife now refuses to set foot in the coach except to remove our belongings. She fears the next time we, or even other travelers, might not get away without being injured or worse. CONCLUSION: I am a graduate Mechanical Engineer with substantial automotive design, and I was a Chief Mechanic for a race car team. As such, it is my educated opinion that all failures are the result of improper bearing installation. i.e. My opinion is the mechanic over-tightened the adjustment nut thereby preloading the bearings excessively. When the normal heating of road travel was added to the bearing load, it overcame the strength of the bearing resulting in catastrophic failure. Bearings, properly installed, simply do not fail. They certainly do not fail with low mileage and over short periods of time.
