AutoMasters Service Center

Okay, I am not claiming I am a mechanic, but I am mechanically inclined. Where a mechanic would take an hour, it would take me two or three, but I know how to repair my cars. The front axle to my car was bad , and my wife insisted that she would not feel comfortable driving it unless there was some type of warranty on the work. So called around look at reviews and chose Automasters. Even though they would not give me a quote over the phone (first warning sign) they did not want to make an estimate until they saw the car just in case there were other problems. Ultimately I felt comfortable with that because I was told they would give a 36 month 36k mile warranty. I get there and after they took a look at it agreed to give me an estimate. They come back with two saying they have been having problems with vibration on the after market part and the dealer part is more expensive. Immediately trying to upsell me? (warning number 2) . I leave the shop to pick up wife and my wife gets a call telling her before they even started the inspection they found that both axles and very bad and need to be replaced, to a tune of over twice what it would cost for one. They took the time to show us why they feel it was both axles and even though I had reservations, we agreed to replace both just encase. We get the written estimate and were told they were not charging the 52.00 inspection fee because they were unable to complete it. I walked in with a fairly good idea idea at the cost of the part and the going rate for labor but wow that is really expensive. When we called and asked why the markup was so high she was told that was the shade tree do it yourself price. We spoke to Tom the manager who was dismissive and informed us that due to a computer program this repair could cost between 400-1300 so they were doing us a favor. The biggest favor they did was show us that they are the shady ones and that we need to find another mechanic. I suggest everyone else who even considers this shop makes a few calls before hand because they expertise does not match the price and the rudeness is not something I want my wife to deal with every time she walks in.
