I had Wooden Window replace the sashes for 11 double hung wooden windows in my house, mostly counter balanced but 2 were spring balanced. Being an old Victorian place each window was a different size, many of the jambs weren't square, one window frame is not even approaching level, and some of the windows being replaced weren't operational. The windows from Wooden Window are extremely well made. The install was a bit of a process because of the state of the old windows & frames. When they went to install 3 of the windows they could not because of how rotten the window jambs were, and in some cases bad repair work blocking the pockets for counter weights. They very quickly quoted a reasonable price for repair and fixed all the issues with the windows. The install went on a week or two longer with all the repair work but they made time for it immediately in their schedule which I really appreciated. The repaired window frames are fantastic, and look a lot better than all the other windows. When I first inspected the windows after install I found a few scratches in the windows. Not acceptable, but I also do not know if these scratches were there at manufacture, or if they were done by the painters (painted by a separate company) or during install. It doesn't matter, because Wooden Window did the awesome thing and immediately replaced the glass planes for any windows I had issue with. No quibbling about whose fault it might have been. They were very happy to address every other note I had too, working hard to adjust how smoothly windows opened, making sure nothing stuck, the spring balances and weights were all just right. They really worked hard to make sure my custom windows could work as well as possible. If they aren't 100% perfect, I blame the century old house where nothing is quite square, or level, or right in any way. If I had to find something to complain about, it'd be that during install the installers would hold the windows in place by screwing into the window jamb and resting the windows on the screws. This both put holes in the jamb (though paint / patching fixed that) and in some cases scratched the edge of the window (though this was mostly then hidden by the stop in front of the window). That, and while the repaired window frames were fantastic, they didn't take as good care of the window trim and surrounding dry wall. I needed the painters to do a lot of patch work to make the window trim and dry wall look good again. Coordinating with separate window painters was quite a pain. Lesson learned, get a good painter and hire then as soon as you sign the contract to make the windows. They can be booked out quite a bit in advance! Overall, I enjoyed working with Wooden Windows. They were very nice, responsive, and professional and I would work with them on windows again.

Wooden Window designed, engineered, custom built, and delivered two very large sliding doors to occasionally partition a loft area in our house. The doors are 9' tall and almost 6' wide and were designed to match other doors in my house. I sketched-up what I had in mind and provided opening dimensions to the engineering team at Wooden Window. We had some very productive back-and-forth regarding recommended materials, dimensions, and hardware options. I was quoted a reasonable price with an anticipated delivery date--and the doors showed up right on time. The doors fit perfectly on the first try, they slide with the touch of a finger despite their 150-lb. weight (each), and have totally created a new space in our home. Thanks Wooden Window!

To all owners of historic homes in San Francisco who need to replace their windows - think carefully before jumping to vinyl or aluminum clad windows. Pay attention to the impact window frames have on the rest of the building, for they are part of the charm. Consider the cost of permits to replace wooden windows vinyl ones and their longevity and aesthetic value (or lack thereof). We hired Wooden Window to replace ten rather large double hung windows in our 1920s condo. The new custom built laminated glass windows, complete with ogee lugs, have changed our lives. Our windows now open from the bottom and top, and the seal is excellent. Broken counterweights have been restored, which means that we no longer have to break our backs to open windows and use props to keep them open. The decibel level of traffic noise is far lower than before, and fewer dust bunnies roll across our wooden floors. We are absolutely thrilled with the craftsmanship and quality of all the windows, and we hope that contractors overseeing other remodeling jobs in our building will engage the same company.

Bill and Jeff at Wooden Windows are experts in their trade, capable of providing a wealth of information and breaking it down into understandable terms. Consultation with Wooden Window left me feeling informed about the decisions I had to make, and as if a window into a new world had been opened in my mind.

I've known Bill and Mark, the head guys at Wooden Window, for nearly 4 years now and I can tell you that they are absolutely at the top of their industry when it comes to manufacturing fine custom doors and windows. They use computer-aided manufacturing tech that allows them to perfectly match existing or older door and window designs, and you absolutely need to go see that machine (they call her "Betsy") in action.. it's mind-boggling.
