I have worked with rik on many different projects they are great company and do quality work and stand behind what they do.

Jul 23, 2016
Per their website and phone answering system, their hours are M-F 9-5, Sat 10-2. Today is a Saturday and I arrived there at 1:45 to drop off a cabinet I wanted modified. The place was closed much to my anger because they verified their Saturday hours when I came in earlier this week to see if they could do this work. There was no sign on the door explaining why they were closed today. Actually this isn't surprising as this business is owned by the Kowall's who are now career politicians (Mike is a state senator and Colleen a county commissioner) who say one thing but do another.

A member of the family that owns this business, Mike Kowall. is a State Senator in Michigan. He recently supported a bill that he apparently thinks will reduce competition for his business. Saying that people visit his showroom but then refuse to buy and order online instead. He was quoted saying this in the Detroit Free Press. So Mike supported passed of a law in the state legislature known as an "affiliate nexus" law which forces out of state companies who have affiliate programs (a commission based advertising relationship) to collect and pay state sales tax in Michigan. Other states have tried this move as well, typically what happens is there is a legal challenge and the law is ruled unconstitutional, and or the affiliate programs simply cancel the memberships of anyone living in the state and so still do not collect sales tax. Furthermore I was alarmed that Mike did this, it seems to me, to help businesses like his family's, I don't think a lawmaker's duty is to help his family business. But I'm also alarmed that he, from my perspective, has so little understanding of the law that he actually thinks it'll help small businesses. Most small businesses don't compete with large affiliate program running ecommerce businesses, most small niche companies don't even run affiliate programs. I've never seen a cabinet maker for instance run an affiliate program, so his apparent desire to stop people from Michigan ordering cabinets from out of state rather than buy at his family business would not seem to be served, at all, by this law. The companies that his law helps are the Walmarts of the world, who compete with Amazon and large ecommerce companies that do run affiliate programs (except in states that pass these laws). Which is why Walmart is one of the major donors behind the lobbyists that are pushing passage of this law. Other companies that this law helps? Lowes and Home Depot - which I imagine are more prime competitor's of "Accurate Woodworking." In anycase, when someone behaves like Mike did in supporting this bill, it would make me never want to do business with him.
