Worked here briefly a few years back. Some excellent programs serving a wide array of mental health illnesses. Unfortunately, this facility has some questionable safety policies in effect. Many of those doors that you can view from the outside of the facility are permanently locked. The unit staff DO NOT have keys for these doors and do not have a means to exit most of them. In a facility occupied by unstable and frequently aggressive clients this is a major safety concern..a concern that staff have apparently been discouraged to alert patients and their guardians about. In an incidence of active assailant or inescapable aggression people could easily be trapped without rapid escape options. I understand that staff have appealed repeatedly to management but concerns have fallen on deaf ears.

Amazing group therapy for cocurring disorders. Can't say enough about how amazing the addiction councillors are. The downside is units outside of the addiction units, and in the halls, there are street drugs hidden craftily in the shadows of this facility. Not a safe place for recovery when meth and crack is being peddled in the facility. When I called the head psychatrist on my unit on this the pat answer I got was "It is going to be out there in the real world." I gave him an ear full, and he said there's nothing he can do about it. Guess what, there is something that can be done about this. It's called piss testing everyone every day. Simon House does it via Unicef Donations. Man up and care about the mentally ill Doc. On that note, I am a recovering addict, I know that drugs are in the real world. I also know the mentally I'll make up most of the market of schedule one drug use. Just sayin doc. Keep em sick, keep ya rich. Update: After talking to the medical professionals in my family, we are all wondering why the Topamax was being ramped up so fast on my diagnosis. It has not yet been approved by the FDA for a multitude of the reasons Dr. Kwan is using it for. Also, the FDA has found many complications with the other prescriptions I am on with Topamax I was complaining about. So I must write a message to all the staff who have stopped listening to the patients of The Centennial Centre. Anyone educated in this world knows addiction issues in North America are nowhere near a cure. Currently we are under a 5% successful lifetime recovery rate. As a client of your facility being witness of the incredible amount of retreads, and your inability to cope and hear with your heart's, I will ensure I tell everyone I know and love to never go to The Centennial Centre. It is the attitude of arrogance that you are right and the client is wrong that really brings medicine to stalemate with addiction. There is many great things going on there, don't get me wrong. But there is a sickness there braided tightly with the indifference of good people, and complacency that ensures the darkness will win there. Even Bill W. had enough humility to write at the end of the 164 to say that we don't have a monopoly on recovery. Best regards to your facilities recovery.
