Correcting Joel MacDonald’s inaccurate comments on fees

I have volunteered as a team manager to both my boys’ teams, during 2014-2019. The season fees are spent on gym rentals, coaches’ salaries, office rentals, and admin costs to run a business. Tournament fees in Alberta are usually around 500-650 C$, that are spread out equally per player (who has committed to play in the tournament) in the team. Tournament fees in USA are usually around 600-850 US$, that are spread out equally per player (who has committed to play in the tournament) in the team. The travel fees or “Coach’s Fees” are spent on the costs that incur when teams play outside of Calgary and in USA. Those costs are equally spread out on each player that has committed to travel and play. Sometimes a player withdraws their commitment after the budget has been made and therefore the fees will be edited and raised. Not a single cent from one player or team goes towards another player or team - elite or not. Sometimes, individual players are funded by parents’ donations.

Not a great experience

Although my experience with this “academy” was short, it was not great. It is understandable that during covid things are run a bit differently however not being allowed to watch your young children play was not a great start. The promise of live steaming was offered and the two classes my children attended, the videos started half way through and the sound didn’t work. My biggest issue, however is with the manager of this association. Dealing with Anita, in the time leading up to the start of the classes was not an enjoyable experience and she often sounded condescending and rude when we asked questions as this was our children’s first time attending and the communication was weak to say the least. My second issue lies in the fact that their program available to children ages 4-7 ia poorly designed. The “star” athletes were favoured and put together on a team and left the less skilled children to play on a team of their own, inevitably causing them to lose.

My son’s first experience with CYDC was with a mini panthers set of sessions at age 5. He loved this first introduction to development and there began his love of basketball. At age 7 he joined the beginner house league and has been part of the CYDC family for the past 10 years. He has been taught the value of family, hard work, commitment, and passion for the sport of basketball. Coaches have come out to watch and support our son during the school season as well. CYDC has grown our son’s confidence and skills each and every season. The coaches mentor our players on and off the court. I highly recommend CYDC for their passion for developing basketball players and good human beings.

We are new to city club ball and had no idea what to expect. Our son moved 10 hours south to play competitive ball and he found it here at CYDC. Our son has loved the experience and has made new friendships. Coach John defends his players to the core and I as a parent, I sure appreciate that. The experience that has been shown and given to our son is greatly appreciated. He has improved his game by leaps. This experience has been a great one. Thank you!

I have played with CYDC for over two years now and have never been more grateful. As soon as you join the club, you are a part of the family. John and Anita are always there to lend a helping hand regardless of your situation. The coaches are invest in both basketball development and character development. Since joining the club I have grown into a better basketball player, but more importantly a better person. I cannot thank CYDC enough.

Our son has been in ball for a very long time. CYDC is our 3rd club and by far our favorite. I email Anita all the time with questions and favors and she is wonderful about everything!!! I always get a quick response and she is always more than willing to help. The coaches are also amazing and have some much knowledge to share with the kids. My son has always felt like he is a part of the family at CYDC. We are looking forward to our next season with them.

My daughter has found a new confidence since she joined the program just 5 months ago. She loves the family and team spirit the coaches teach. She is a tiny girl (compared to the girls she plays against) and she has learned to play with heart! This is the first team sport she has participated in and I love the sportsmanship the coaches preach. Thank you CYDC.
