Best camping experience in Banff (we stayed in multiple campgrounds) even with the trains. We pulled up and got a spot (even during peak season), and we immediately loved the location. Tucked away in the trees, next to the river, and the campsites had more space than any other campground we stayed at. The campground seemed full but even then we got to take showers when we wanted without waiting in a line, and the washing stations were nicer than Lake Louise Campground. We woke up early (6am) and hiked up to Johnston Canyon (less than 1/4 mile away from the campground). We were 2 of about 15 people on the trail and we enjoyed the lovely sights. We would absolutely stay here again, the train only shook the car and woke us up once which for us was no big deal.

Big sites. Good spacing between sites. Firewood is included. Drinkable tap water. Showers are included. Alcohol consumption is prohibited after 11 pm and possession is prohibited during holiday long weekends. At 11 pm someone came around reminding us it was time to put the fire out. The train runs along the south of the campground. It's a medium distance away for a mountain campgrounds. You will hear it but it's not as loud as some campgrounds.

Take care to make sure where your camp site is and its distance from the railroad. Unfortunately not properly noted and detailed on the registration or Parks Canada site. The trains can run at midnight , 3am and 5am of what I remember and it's horn blast will shake your soul . Otherwise a good site. Close to the Johnstone canyon trail , clean washrooms and showers.

This is a popular place, but too popular for my liking. If you are looking for wilderness and solace with quiet walk aways nearby, I would prefer Lake Louise.

Beautiful setting for camping. We came here en route for a walk worth a visit. Seems basic but nice and neat.
