May 2017 Bear Hunt. Poor rating from the 9 hunters in camp. Only 2 bears seen & shot from the Outfitters stands. Bait looked like feed mill dust collector screenings & molasses run through an extruder to form pellets. Bait turned to slop when it got wet. Baits where not hit much and when they where there was nothing to keep the bears around or interested. When hunting buddy asked for new stand, outfitter tried to get us stuck back in the middle of no where. We where to have 2 'active' baits each. As the Outfitter was showing the one hunter his stand the Outfitter says"Oops forgot the bucket" it was not even put up so how could he say that was an active bait? We had asked for our 2 tree stands(each) to be setup so we could use the best one for the wind direction. When we questioned it, he said it did not matter! Later in the week he said our breath was scaring them away, (we where totally scent free, changing at the truck before heading into stands, we stripped down to under wear then put on hunting clothes) we had to keep out scent down. We where hunting to much? Another one of his statements we never did understand. Too cold, bears went back into semi-hibernation mode? Another guy I know was in Alaska same week, seen 40 bears but could not get close enough because of the snow. All the hunters in camp expected to see multiple bears every day. Never seen a bear while in a tree stand, only seen one @ 300 yards on the road driving to stand. Fishing. Others in camp that where fishing did not have good reports. Mind you the weather was cool and damp. They were not catching much unless they went to one of their outpost lakes, up to 1.5 hr away! Camp. Water & septic issues, could not drink water from taps chlorination system was down. Toilets slow to flush, smell of sewage they had to get system pumped mid week. Cabins have mice. Good, it is a high population year for rabbits, lots of shoeshoe's running around with white feet. Seen lots of foxes and fox pups. Seen one lynx and 1 moose on road, on the way back from bear stands.
