If you like nature and waterfalls, then this is a worth-the-trip destination. It has two parts, an upper section in which one huge waterfall crashing down over the natural shale cliff, and the lower section is a spread out multi- tiered cascading waterfall complete with an island you can hike and a lake at the bottom, before it continues down the river. The water is a unique, rusty, ruddy brown (my son calls it maple syrup). You can rent row boats to cross the lake to the island. Modern bathrooms are available at the upper falls. Just a heads up, a state park recreation pass is required, but can be purchased at the park entrance. There is also a trail connecting the upper and lower sections which is about four miles long. It follows the river most of the way, and is scenic and lovely north Michigan woodland hiking. There is a private service which will shuttle people from one end to the other, but please verify that it will be running and their capacity/payment options before planning on using that service. There are concessions and ice cream and a gift shop at the lower falls, and a restaurant and gift shop at the upper falls. Food trucks set up here seasonally as well. The bugs are definitely difficult to contend with, but that is always the case in Northern Michigan. Bring a lot of bug spray. The crowds are large in the summer, but if you take your time most people are nice and everyone gets a chance to see the falls. Still, this is one of Michigan's nicest natural inland features, and I recommend visiting it any time of year (although fall is particularly nice).

Part of what makes this falls so famous is the volume of water that flows over every second. The access to the upper falls is an easy paved path but there are well over 100 stairs if you go down to both of the overlooks. If you can its worth the effort. Tahquamenon is well worth the stop if you're in the area but in my opinion there are far more beautiful falls around if you're willing to drive an hour or so west.

Beautiful area with lots of hiking, the falls are amazing and if you spend a weekend in the UP its a must. The campgrounds all were very buggy but if you wore bug spray it was not noticeable. I highly recommend bringing a swimsuit or something that can get wet because If you go up the lower falls trail you can wade in the water a little bit. The store sells tons of souvenirs and also the standard outdoor gear found in most state park shops so I would advise skipping it because most of it is highly marked up, but if it's a hot day I would recommend buying some of the ice cream.

I went to this park with my family for our vacation up north and it's a great park to visit if you have the time. You have two options to see the upper falls, to drive or to hike. If you were to hike, it takes 8-9 miles and depending on your pace that can be awhile. The lower falls are easier to get to and you can put on a bathing suit and go in the water. The location has barley any cell service, but you should expect that anywhere in the Upper Peninsula. They have a gift shop and a ice cream shop nearby.

This park is so big. Plan on walking quite a bit. The falls are beautiful but don't be surprised by the color, it is from the tannin in the area. Each set of the falls are different so don't miss them both. Volunteers man info tables great for kids and me to learn about nature in the park. There is a big gift shop and restaurant in the park, operated by private vendors but worth a stop.
