We had a terrible experience at the Canoe Kids camp which is run by the Burnaby Canoe and Kayak Club. Unbeknownst to parents, The camp counsellors allowed the kids to swim in the lake which is a wildlife area and according to Fraser Health is unmonitored but likely has a high fecal count. The children wore life jackets however there was no lifeguard onsite and the children were at times being observed from inside the rowing club. This is not an adequate level of supervision for 35 children who are swimming. The camp leaders didn't seem to understand how important proper sign in/sign out procedures would be for a children's camp being held beside the lake and stopped doing it after the first morning. The camp counsellors were on their phones instead of interacting with the kids at times. There was considerable time spent on the dock with no planned games or activities, just a bucket of balls which is fine for short periods of time but not for hours. We are also unclear what level of instruction the kids were receiving in their paddling sessions. All in all this camp was a big disappointment and not adequately supervised. I withdrew my child after two days once I realized what was going and so did my friend for her son. Great idea for a camp but the club needs to bring in people who are experienced in caring for children safely and responsibly.
