Just had a dock delivered on the weekend from Highland Forest Products. Everything is good and as discussed with Peter beforehand. Pricing was the best I could find. Highly recommended.

My apologies for such a long review but this is quite ridiculous. We ordered a 10x16 floating dock with a 4x16 ramp. When it arrived we met HFP at our boat launch area and towed the complete system over to our shoreline. Only after they started to offload the ramp did we notice they had mistakenly placed the hinge mounts for the ramp connection in the wrong location. No problem, in the end this worked out and we decided it was fine the way it was (saving them considerable effort and potential cost to make it right). Where we had the real issue was with the anchoring of the dock and the placement/anchoring of the ramp to shore. In my limited experience (and considerable review of best practices for anchoring a floating dock) I asked the "installers" if they should be criss-crossing the anchor chains...they replied "we never do that, we just drop them over the edge"...what? no criss cross of the anchor chains? no 45 degree angle out from the corners? They also had no preparation for how to "land" the shore section and simply dropping it at the bottom of my PT stairs...no anchoring to shore needed they said. Baloney! Within first few hours the dock was moving laterally (as clearly mentioned in every article I pulled up) and pulling itself away from shore. I contacted HFP and explained the situation and was advised the dock was "installed correctly, this is how we have been doing it for years", "not sure where you're getting your information from" "that's a complete waste of chain". Wow I guess everyone else if full of it because HFP have been doing it this way for years. I was advised if I wanted to criss-cross the chains in this fashion I could purchase more chain and some couplers myself but they would not be returning to do it nor cover the cost of 2 sections of 5' chain so I could do it myself. Furthermore, it was explained to me that I had not purchased additional chain length (but nowhere was it disclosed how much chain was included...so funny). What exactly did I pay for in a turnkey installation? In light of the fact we had the dock delivered in the wrong configuration and were less than 3-4 km from their front door, I would have thought this would be a no brainer for any business person to make this right. Hence my review. I would not recommend Haliburton Forest Products for the simple reason they made no effort what so ever to assist us once the cheque cleared. While the dock itself is much like any other we looked at, the installation method and follow up customer service and complete lack of caring was not at all what I expected. At the time of the dock purchase I also enquired about tongue and groove cedar as we are planning to finish two main rooms. I guess that business is lost as well. So short sighted.
