First I need to say the main reason they seem paranoid is because they constantly have homeless going into there store and trying to rip them off. Iv been shopping at A1 for a long time and yes customer service is lacking. They know me by site so I don't get bothered but being nice and talking to them warms them up. If you want quality and selection this is the place. And if you think you'll find what you need at Mark's good luck with that Cheers

Speaking to the low reviews on A1 here: Yeah the customer service can be a bit lacking or awkward, and if you’re the easily offended type I could see you feeling watched. It’s unusual but it’s so consistent there has to be a deeper reason, which I’m not familiar with, so I just go with it. At least they treat everyone this way, so you can’t say they’re not fair! And the hours can be hit or miss - everyone has staffing issues these days. A-One specializes in safety and they do it VERY well. Possibly the best I have ever seen and I’ve been up and down and across Canada and the US. I always hunt down the local safety store and no one has anything on Duncan’s A-One. Just call ahead to make sure they’re open and go and enjoy what they’re great for - a huge selection of quality safety and workwear. As long as you remember you’re shopping for safety gear and that you might not be doted on as you wish you’ll be fine; just manage your expectations on that front and it’ll be fine. I’ve been shopping here for ten years and I’ll continue to support and appreciate the service! They have a huge selection and in S/XS sizes as well, which is unheard of at any other safety store. Small people deserve to be safe and fitted well. Thanks A-One. Very grateful to have you in Duncan.

Best safety supply store on the island. A-One has the best selection of boots and work clothes, the best high-vis, supplies for more industries than you can shake a stick at, the largest variety of high quality gloves ANYWHERE on Vancouver Island. This is one of my favourite stores, period.

Terrible customer service. Older lady at front desk was extremely rude. Never again will I give A1 my money. You can get most of this stuff at Adam's, Marks etc and the prices are generally lower never mind their customer service far surpasses A1.

I arrived early on August 16 2022 looking for a professional grade pruning saw. I got the most courteous, dignified service. I was escorted to the back of a good-size store and shown all the brands and models (good selection, from sturdy, economical Marvins to graceful high-end Silkys). Explained my needs and got frank advice. Another salesperson dropped by to check if I had found what I wanted. ! bought a Marvin 380, went home and made firewood out of 6'" limbs of my huge magnolia. Practically falled it. Top-drawer performance. When I asked for their leather sheath the respectful gentleman said this one had no sheath in stock but was on order and I could phone them in a few days. I can't wait to go back an check out their whole store! My advice to grumpy, nervous shoppers. Smile. Be relaxed. Be nice. Hang out. Be friendly. Be chatty. Don't act like a shop-lifter. Make their job more enjoyable. This is a one-of-a-kind store in our Cowichan Valley neck of the woods. The real thing. And my saw cost less than every offer for it online, including the Fred Marvin website. Migod that Fiskars I bought in a certain yellow-decor big-box store was rubbish and cost the same and couldn't manage a spent toilet roll. Don't tell A1! Wade in Saltair
